have you checked the post/terminal connections which connect to the brushes via a screw? these all have to be in place.

now its clean, might be worth bunging it back together to see if it works. could have been a little dirt... hopefully.

Hi yeah, checked them. Then all look ok. All springs in place etc. I'm starting to tink it could be the windings. Might try to take it to an alternator specialist who refurb them and see what they got to say
 
Normally if the windings are suspect you will see evidence of arcing, though that isn't fool proof so you might be as well taking it to an electrical shop and getting them to test it as they know what they are looking for.
