He did say he was told to use grease to catch the swarf so reasonable to assume he was advised to do it in situ. The grease trick is one of those wonderful old techniques that never works properly.
Should get the head off and have a look. If he's lucky a big bit has locked it at TDC and he can clean all the crap out. Then get an engineering company to sort the head and he can put it back together.
Admittedly, there's a fair bit of luck involved but you never know.

i agree with old school the plugs on cast heads on fords were/are terrible for being arse nippingly tight and they were always skinny plugs too never actually broke any but had to heat gently with a wee jet, as for the guy who wrote this thread it sounds like you have bummed your engine get a mechnic to have a look and confirm its shagit if so you might as well get yourself a haynes manual and strip the engine and do some learning, lesson 1 dont bore out a plug in situ lol
