I'm getting a hire car from the AA on Tuesday so might see what my local indie can supply. Have to take a day off work to do it all tho.

Good question.
I replaced the water pump, thermostat and radiator and it's been fine ever since.
It is pressurising occasionally though so I suspect I have a leaking HG but it's clearly only going across to the water jacket. It's on my list of things to do. It never overheats and runs fine, but does lose a bit of water every week.

Not noticeably so. I think it just failed due to a bodged previous repair to the little pipe on the top of the rad.
The water pump looked A1 too, so that was probably a waste of money, but I'd rather have been safe than sorry.

I always used to replace water pumps etc. as a matter of course during a dismantling job - with so many cheap **** Chinese parts about these days, I worry about putting a new part on that isn't as good as the old one which may still have plenty of life left in it.

I agree, I am collecting old dizzy caps now as every new one from every brand seems worse!
