The instrument cluster has it's own memory chip (eProm) which stores the mileage in approximately 100 miles batches. This data is "Burned" into nthe chip and cannot be erased other than replacing the chip.
The mileage stored in the Becm can be reset by unlocking and reducing the stored figure.
Tommo has the right info, insomuch as the display will update to the highest stored figure, whether stored in the cluster or the Becm.
When buying a used cluster, in order to prevent the problem, buy a cluster with a LOWER mileage than the original, that way the display will update to the higher figure which will be that stored in the Becm and therefore the correct mileage. You will probably get "Odometer error" messages for a short while but the odometer will usually jump to the correct figure, or the "Odometer synchronise" function can be used on Faultmate to reset it immediately and clear the error message.
