This is a stupid question and I'm sure there is a simple answer to it. Just checking though.

Had the Disco for a few weeks now. Did Newbourne play day with the SLROC and I've had a few days off road at WildTracks. As well as a little green laning.

Every time I use the brakes off road........ the pedal goes almost to the floor and the brakes don't work You have to pump them 3 or 4 times in quick succession and then they'll work.

Soon as you get back on the road though, they're fine. No fluid loss so can't be anything major..... can it?

Normally this would be a bad thing on any of my other vehicles but being a land rover I am guessing it could be normal?

Am I safe to assume that it's the mud and water causing the "problem"?

You should be using the engine to brake off road mainly anyway. Probably normal but I'm sure others more experienced will advise

Yes. Engine braking is used but it is something I just happened to notice..... being an auto disco

I've an auto disco my brakes seeme fine, as far as i can remember don't even think used the brakes just the tickover I now have the spongy pedal but that's because I've just changed pads and a Caliper
as you say could jut be water between disc and pad

did you bleed the system after........?

Well ive not done any off roading in mine but i would say.
Its not normal for the brake pedal to hit the floor at any time.
Get it checked out.

Normally this occurs when the disc is able to wobble slightly on its axis, either due to worn bearings etc. It can also occur if there are loose caliper bolts.

All the above will enable the disc to knock the pads back - a common problem when racing bikes and cars at speed when wheels are unbalanced.

Perhaps this is more noticiable off road as the wheels are under more stress than whilst driving on road.

I would just check through your drive train to ensure all is well. Also don't automatically think it is restricted to the front end.

Blooming hope he did, sorry I i left the word had out of that sentence


I'll check with my mechanic mate that did the job, He said it should be ok after a couple of days if they arn't I'll get him to bleed them to make sure

i took my d2 auto off road at christmas. when i was done the brakes were crap. they get very hot etc due to the TC using them to curb wheel spin.

Drove home, cleaned her off and BOTH front disks had a big CRACK in them :brick:

So full service inc disks and pads then £££

I'd check the disks as they were flexi on mine, glad they didn't break up.
