Yet again my rear caliper is binding on one side - this time its the drivers side. i seem to be forever greasing slider pins and working pistons in and out.
anyway, i think i broke something this time. i took the pads out and with a piece of wood in the caliper, i started the engine, opened lid of brake fluid reservoir and pumped the piston out. then used a c- clamp to push it back in. i repeated this a few times and noticed that when the brake pedal was released, the piston did NOT back off a little. could this be a problem with a master cylinder or caliper??
anyway, on the third attempt i had the piston at full pumped out position but now i cant get it to go back in. any thoughts? have i knackered the caliper or was it goosed already?

Is this on a RRC or p38?

I had similar problems on my RRC 200 tdi, my solution was to buy a couple of piston kits from Fleabay, came complete with new pistons, new seals, ect, I even put new disc's on as well as they were so cheap.

Piece of cake to do and gave stonking brakes, poped the old pistons out with compressed air, gave the bores a light scrub round with some very fine wet or dry paper, popped in the new seals, a quick slosh of clean fluid and pop in the new pistons, good as new!

Have your pistons got any pust pitted marks on them? are the dust seals in good nic?

its a 2001 P38 DHSE.
the dust boots look ok. no holes or tears yet. The pistons have very slight rust marks but not enough to call pitting.

Is it tricky to bleed all the air out of the system. i knw this can be a problem on some cars?

I don't know how dificult it is to bleed a p38, wouldn't have thought it will be too bad, get someone to pump the peddal for you, even easier!

If you strip and rebuild the caliper you'll know it not going to give you any trouble for a good long while and it's nice to know the brakes are spot on.
