Quick question gents..

now that i have my new drive flanges I'm also putting new brake shoes in as the ones I have in there have almost nothing left.

But I think i might be missing a spring? or maybe it wasnt connected properly?

I've taken this pic from busters guides and then modified it.

on this picture he has a spring connecting the brake shoes at the top and bottom.
mine, at the top, only had one spring connected to a stud (where red mark is) and the right shoe didnt have a spring at the top
also on his it happears to have one adjuster on each side, mine only has one adjuster on one side...

is this a case that im missing a spring? the right brake shoe should also have a spring connected to the red bit (where stud is)
or should the spring connect both brake shoes together instead of going to this stud?

also at the bottom, mine has a circular shape, not a square like his have

do i have some older version or newer?

Your springs should go between the shoes as shown on Busters pic.

Depending on the make of your shoes you will find either square or rounded ends which don't make any difference.

Your setup is correct, there should be a spring at the top from the leading shoe (ie. the one at the front of the vehicle) that goes from the shoe to the peg on the backplate as you describe. There is no top spring on the trailing (rear) shoe. The bottom spring goes from shoe-to-shoe, and the shoe retainer is usually circular as you say.

Yours is a 90, Buster's is a 110. The rear brakes differ between them. 110s do indeed have a spring going from shoe to shoe at the top as well as the bottom. They also have two snail cam adjusters per side, whereas 90 rear brakes only have them on the leading shoes.

I'm leaning more towards Retroanaconda answer as it does make sense and its more complete than Oldseadog though

anyone else care to share their views?
Gonna be doing this job this afternoon... and I was thinking of taking the other side apart and see how its done there, then do the same, would be much concidence if both sides were missing a spring!

Retoanaconda is correct. Lower spring shoe to shoe,top spring front shoe to peg.Also to prevent brake grab round off the leading edge of the brake material with a file.cheers.

Apologies, As far as I was aware all the 90's and 110's had the same drums and shoes!

I didn't know that the one I worked on recently must have had a 110 axle and twin adjusters on it from new!

However, I stand corrected!

Retroanaconda is correct according the last months land rover int magazine, for a 90 for sure, cant comment on a 110.

I had been a pleb and for some reason put the spring to both shoes on the top, **** brakes, so **** i have sorn it whilst sorting the house out until reading last months LandRover Owner Int mag and reading an stating what i had done wrong, getting my spanner out this weekend now.
