when breaking im hearing grinding, its not like a constant grind its more like SCRAPE SCRAPE SCRAPE SCRAPE, mostly coming from drivers side drum.
Ive had the drum off (came off quite easily) and the shoes have plenty of padding left. I think it just needs ajusting, but not sure how.

is the adjuster thingy located behind the hub? or is access gained from the front with the drum off? I need help checking if they are central aswell but i dont know what im looking for.

Just wanna try things myself before resorting to a mechanic

You can gain access through a slot from behind the backplate but to be honest it isn't worth the hassle as it's quite tricky without knowing exactly what to adjust. Best take the drum off & then you'll see exactly what the layout is & more importantly what way to turn the adjuster when the drum is back on. Usual procedure is to put the handbrake on one notch & then adjust until the drum just turns freely & doesn't bind, take the car out for a good run & bang on the brakes hard for a few times both forwards & reverse in order to settle the automatic adjusters & repeat if necessary. It is a pain as you'll find the automatic adjusters keep compensating for anything you do but asw long as your rear brakes don't bind or aren't too slack (e.g. handbrake comes on between 2-6 notches) then it should be ok.

Whilst you've got your drums off then put some copperease on the pivot where the handbrake cable connects to & it is really worthwhile if you have the time to remove the shoes & clean/very lightly copperease the raised pads where the shoes sit against the backplate as this is what mostly causes the handbrake to stick overnight when it rains.

One other point, check the clips which hold the shoes on to the backplate. mine were so tight that they prevented any movement of the shoe on the near side brakes. When I removed the drum at 35k there was no dust (or wear) what so ever, the internals were pristine new.
The workshop manual says press the foot brake 30 times to adjust the brakes! Sounds excessive but its seems a few odd prods isnt enough.

Would bad adjustment cause the scraping noise though ? I have the same noise - just posted a question on the subject. Didnt find this post on the search.

i managed to adjust mine in the end and made the drum free to turn without rubbing, did all the checks and 1 day later grinding was back but worse.

im just going to replace shoes and springs with new ones and see how that goes, only option i have really.
