Hi Guys,

Started changing my brake pads last night, did the first side, and noticed there were shims on the pads. My new Mintex ones didn't have the shims, and I thought nothing of it so just chucked them on. Went to do the other side and realised the calliper was knackered, so gave up for the night and ordered two new callipers.

Read my Haynes manual this morning, they say that new shims must be put on with the new pads. Is this necessary? What's their purpose?

That is how it works, designed that way. Good rule to follow, read twice follow the directions you'll get success, do it your way and get??? didn't save any money.

I wasn't trying to save money, was just ignorance on my part, didn't think they were that important. I was just wondering what their purpose is? I can't see them listed on the paddocks website either?

I believe those sims are for the pads dont rattle act as sliders for them to ride on should be a stainless steel ,this dosen't allow it to rust things up and not seize up. in the 70's they were just steel to steel here and would rust up and hang up , pressure from caliper wouldn,t release . Those sims come with the kit not listed seperate,look through the trash for the new ones or old ones. good luck

shouldnt worry theres not many vehicles have the ,most pads come with a pad on back covering half which does same thing brakes will work fine with or without

Well it's seems to be a rubber effort, stuck to the back of the pad, but not to the sides. I'd have thought plenty of copper grease on the sides would stop the pad from seizing? I can understand that it would stop rattling against the piston though, that makes sense. Cheers mate!

Ahh great thanks James! Would you recommend plastering the back of the pad with copper grease too?

As James said.I have never fitted any on a disco 1,so far.Copper grease yes,but not in such quantities that it would get on the braking surfaces in use.The springs on the pins are the anti rattle element (as far as I know) and are both worth replacing when you do the pads,for the extra amount of money involved.

Thanks for the reply mate! Yep, I've replaced those, bought the fitting kit with the pads. I'll put a bit of copper grease on and have done with it

I was always under the impression they were anti-squeel shims. To stop the screech when the pads move slightly under pressure.

Maybe! I'll soon see when I re-assemble...eventually!

Ordered two new callipers from John Craddock, cheapest around. Phoned up before I placed my order to check they were the correct fitment, the guy said yes after checking his PC, and that they're in stock. Paid them, and paid £10 for next day delivery.

Had a phone call an hour later off a woman, who said they didn't appear to have the nearside one in stock. I was a bit peeved but she agreed to send the offside (problematic) one now so I'd have it tomorrow, then the other would be with me by Monday. I just had a phone call off a different chap, who said they can't do what the woman had promised, as that would mean they'd have to pay next day carriage twice! So I got a bit ****y but he wouldn't budge. He said he, 'thinks' they'll be here Saturday....really needed the disco tomorrow too! First time I've dealt with Craddock's and it'll be my last. I wish I'd spent a bit more and ordered from Paddocks! Never had an issue with them!
