As you can probably see I am new To the forums....can anyone tell me please what the material is inside the bonnet is it insulation or fire pro material and where do I get some replacement material from....and, once bought is it just glued into place....currently restoring our series 3 1971 swb...many thanks

The series 3 bonet did not have any insulation. You can get sticky back, foil coated sound proofing insulation off eBay which works reasonably well. Otherwise search on here to see what others have done.

Post a piture, it could be anything as some many types of insualtion have been tried over the years. As there was none orginally you could just leave it off for now. You don't want to trap moisture on the steel frame and if its not well fixed it can fall in to the fan.

I was going to say, mine had a thin layer of paint at best for insulation. Not a bad idea though, some aftermarket stuff under the bonnet.

The thing about sound proof insulation for cars and vans is that you don't necessarily need to cover the whole panel. Most noise in a car is caused by vibration through the panals. A few well placed strips work as well as a whole covering but cost less and are less prone to fall off. Rob is correct in saying you don't want to trap moisture around the steel frame of the bonnet. I used the foil coated, self adhesive type on my bonnet and the difference in cab noise was significant.
