Hi guys,

I've just bought a 04 plate facelift Freelander TD4 SE which is my first venture into the world of 4x4. I pick it up on Thursday.

The mileage is a bit high at 91,000 but from what I've read that's nothing to worry about. What I am a little concerned about is that I noticed that when I went to drive it there was a bit of blue smoke at start up which soon cleared.

I've built a few bikes and done a bit of work on cars in the past so to me blue smoke is oil leaking into the cylinders but from what I've read on here there could be a few other reasons for this so the first thing I'll do is give it a good service, changing all the filters and plugs, got most of the parts already ordered from Paddock's.

From what I read on here I should change the crankcase breather for the BMW cyclone one, what I couldn't find though is what part number or what BMW it comes off and where's the best place to buy it?

Anyone got any advice for me as a first ime owner?

First off give it a good service with the correct oil. If that doesn't cure it would point to valve guide oil seals if the smoke clears after a few seconds!!
 
Can't believe I'm going to ask this, it's such a Noob question but................what oil would you recommend.

Sorry, I'm not used to deisels.

I'm also planning on putting some engine flush through it, some fuel system treatment and maybe some engine treatment like ZX1, what are your views on that. I've used fuel system treatment and ZX1 on cars and bikes before but never flushed and engine and obviously never tried them on a diesel engine before.
 
5w-30 fully synthectic .
I use the castrol magnetec that halfords sometimes has on offer @ £17.50 .

Flush - can't harm , Fuel treatment yes but not sure about the ZX1 I would not add anything to oil , Just buy good oil and change regular .
Have you checked the EGR valve for crude ?
 
Not checked anything yet, I don't pick the car up until Thursday. Done a bit of reading on the egr valve, need to do some more though, looks like there's a lot to read about blanking it off.
 
I would not do a flush if it has any seal problems they will be worse after, one thing you will not get from paddocks is a turbo vent filter they do not know what one is, thats the one that looks like a petrol filter hanging down the back of the engin.
 
I've never used engine flush before but thought I might give it a go as the engine has a few miles on it and I don't know it's history. I think there's 2 camps when it comes to engine flushing, do or don't, I gues I was looking for someone to say they'd done it before and it's not a problem.

I had seen the turbo vent filters and couldn't see any on Paddocks but I've got a few fuel filters that look the same in my garage that I could use, need to have a look after I get the car and check what size the one that's fitted is to see if they'll suit.

I've ordered up the BMW oil separator and EGR bypass. I need to stop reading this forum so much because have sat for most of the morning reading threads about the Synergy 2A. Improved performance would be good but my wife will only be doing about 16 miles a day in the Freelander so payback on fuel savings would take forever.

plus it you upgarde the engin performance you need to tell your insurance and they will charge you thus.

I put a flush and cheap oil in the replacement V6 as I knew nothing about it's history before me other than what I was told by the seller. With the flush/oil it smoked thick blue just after startup for about 30 seconds before it cleared?? Now I've changed it to the correct grade of quality oil the smoke has gone along with the slight tapping from one follower :)
But like you I don't generally use a flush as they can do more harm than good!!
