Hi, I've just had a replacment steering box fitted and think that the radiator hoses might have been discontected (to fit it) as it is now running in the red on the temparature gauge. Even after an half hour run, the 2 bottom hoses are cold and the water in the top up tank is lukewarm, which I'm guessing it shouldn't be? Also the radiator only feels hot near the top hose on the right hand side - the left of the radiator feels cold? is there a bleed valve and does anyone know how to bleed it? I've just taken the filler drain plug out on the top of the rad and there is oil on it and also inside the rad in the water?
Any ideas as always, greatly appreciated!

think you may need new rad ,has yours oil coller pipe in rh side of rad ,shoulnt need anyother bleeding than removing rad bung is thermostat working top hose hot if it is cold if not
 
You dont have to remove the hose to change the steering box. as the securing bolts are on the side at the wheel.

What engine is it ?? Usually you just remove the plug at the top of the radiator or with the 300TDI you remove the thermostat housing one as well
 
Well if you have ran it for half an hour with the temp gauge in the red and it hasnt seized and the header tank is only luke warm i would hazard a guess and say you have a 200tdi and easiest thing to check first in the temp sensor wiring up near the stat housing.
Maybe they knocked it when doing the box?

You will have to get the thermometer out. My land rover gauge read in the middle, but when i replaced the gauge with a TIM one it turns out the stat was opening at 66 deg used a thermometer to check this, It might even be the gauge i know my fuel gauge is fecked as the sender is giving corresponding readings to the amount of fuel in the tank.
 
cheers guys! it's an original 2.5 diesel. I'll check if there is an oil cooler pipe, and check the thermostat (if I can find it) - don't understand why there are globs of black oil in the water when I take the plastic screw in plug on top of the rad?
 
Oil in the water is a very bad thing, Either the head gasket or headk is ffed, or maybe the rad/oil cooler has a hole in it
 
Well, I've drained the system and flushed it through with a hose pipe in the top of the rad with the engine drain plug out until it ran clear. Put it all back together refilled with the right mix and its still the same - no oil, but top hose hot, and bottom/expansion bottle cool. It did seem abit better in the gauge, but does anyone know if the bottom hose/expansion bottle should actually get hot after say half and hour?

I would pull the thermostat out and check it, The hose might be top due to the water going through the bypass or the stat might not be opening fully.
If the stat is working properly then it sounds like it could be a knackered rad,
 
youve got a air lock.drain your systen and refill at the radiator with the plug on thermostat housing open. you MUST have the expansion tank cap on while you fill the rad. fail to do it this way you will air lock. once rad and stat are full fit plugs, then top up expansion tank 1/2 full
