As we are now on our 3rd Disco i'm sick to death with these pesky things. Just had mot done and she failed on the front right with advisories on all the rest!!! now i havnt the tools to do them so she goes in today for a new set, the thing is i guess there is some play with these in standard driving but EVERY disco ive owned has had at least 2 go! at £100+ each 1 infact siezed on the M40 at 60 and slewed me across the motorway.
The good news other than that is that she had no rot at all and only a bulb out, and the front right headlight insecure!!!
One of the last ones I did we had to angle grind off the o ring as it had welded itself on.
Anyone else have this reoccuring problem???
 
Sounds like the times come to invest in some tools and start saving the labour money...reducing those bills...:eek:
 
I can do all the electrics and engine work on these and the handbrake and brakes BUT it seems every time i go to do a wheel bearing somthing comes up that i havnt got the tools for or in fact knowledge!!!!!!! definitly the later. also Dads just got a Disco and his is having the same kinds of problems as mines had, good for him as i can generally fix the easier jobs and infact diagnose over the phone (belt pulley tensioner and the 1 p).
Oh well the garage must just love seeing my disco come round the corner!!!:p
 
no real special tools required to do whellbearing and at less than £40 for two wheels (bearmach parts) from Mailorder4x4 they take about half hour a corner
 
The only tool you need for wheel bearings is a hub nut spanner and the're cheap as chips. Some folks use the hammer and chisel approach but I'd not recommend that.

Doing wheel bearings is easy. As long as the bearings themselves are O.K. and there is no apparent damage to the seals all you need to do is check for play and if there is any, undo two nuts, repack the bearings with grease then reassemble. Pretty easy really. Get a manual it's all in there.
 
Classic, read your post i had thought that today so packed them up and hey fekin presto pass, well impressed also got a required spanner and will do the lot soon. so now i'll stop whingin and get on with sealing the leak.;)
