Ok hope the pics work, so Willo just for you, take orft engine cover,undo the air filter cover [the two bolts at the rear are a pain] undo the yello oil filler cap[make sure you dont drop anything inside] and remove the air filter cover[put yellow cap back on]this is so ya dont drop any thing in it,remove the wiring loom[ three self tapers] and move to one side , undo the four allan bolts that hold the de- compresion valve and lift it out,ok at this point if you find its jamming on way up ,it could be hitting the bleed off pipes, if it is ,pull out the metal caption pin on the injector[dont forget to put it back on later]ok ya might have to do 2,lift it out , put in new filter + seal + new gasket, re assemble by reverse logic , and make sure you put the metal pins back. on 2nd pic 1=the de compresion valve 2=wiring loom. . .:)

Hi ming,

Are the metal caption pins of the bleed off pipes those I marked in red pse ? If I have to take them out won't there be a risk of leaking afterwards ?? Tnx.

 
Um no i got the same as yourself Mond , but must add ,glad i did it as the filter was in a right mess, aparently its something that is not on the service and i think it should be , if it doe's not do its job[de-compress the engine] it could cause untold damage. . .so thanks fer the advice Mondo. . .:)
 
Yes you are correct Willo , don't worry they are safety captions and with thought and care very easy with a small pair off pointed nose pliers, but like the Mondo say's try not to drop them ,if you look very close at the picture you can see on my motor where the pipes are in the way of the unit. . . :)
 
When I went to the dealer to buy the filter I spoke to the headmechanic who asked what it was good for to change that filter, they never did. But the guy in the partsdepartment said it needed regular replacement, so it looks there are different opinions about. (If engine breather is blocked I think clutchdust said it can force the engine to start breathing through the turbo etc... with all the risks and costs coming from it).
Anyway, one of these days I'm going to take my courage in both hands and start undoing the airfilter housing (bought also a can of brakecleaner stuff for the MAF) to check all in there and also exchange the breather filter. Thanks for the pictures ming, they are great :D , and till later.;)

Hi ming,

Yes, that's what I had in mind, but what I am wondering of is when these pins (clips) are removed, what can be moved than ? does that whole black round thing come off or are these clips only there to keep the bleed off pipes (with the black canvas around?) in place on top of these black round things ?
 
Once the clips are off willo,just the pipes come off, nothing else, you need only remove the two center ones to get the filter out and they just press back in, replace the clip, Job done!:D
 
So Willo after removing the steel caption pins ,the pipe's lift up, and so you can then move the pipes out of the way ,so you can then lift up the de- compression valve, the Allan bolts are captioned [they wont fall out] hope this makes sense, as like yourself English is not my birth language. . .:) :) :)

No, not at all, very glad to have got that info. and help so far. Will try not to disappoint you both and clear the job as it should. Things look more clear to me now. One more thing though, re the gaskets, they are not flat on the cover/engine housing but at a right angle to it (got this from a dictionnary:D ), is there a groof in the engine housing in which the gasket fits and that the top of it gets squeezed flat by the cover when mounting it ?

Thanks to the very clear and elaborate info. and pictures received from the two of you the job is done. Unfortunately I was not able to get my MAF out of the system so nothing done to that. Couldn't release the 5star Torx screws on top. Tried to remove the whole housing but after I undid the two clips there was still no move in the whole housing so I decided not to continue the attempt. Just replaced my 3 year old K&N airfilter with a stock one I still had lying around. This will give me all the time to get a cleaning/maintenance kit of K&N whereafter it will go into the car again. Btw. Of the two bleeding things in the middle where I removed the clip off there was one which leaked just a drop of gasoil, the other one stayed dry.

It's not done on purpose I think, when it fails with all the problems it can cause people have to go back to the garage anyway, so it's NCR time for them...:D :D

Yes i agree,there is another problem with design,the rubber cold air input pipe are to close to the hard plastic bits and when the engine acoustic cover is fitted,the engines vibration cuts into the rubber,as soon as you get a hole in this you introduce hot air ,hence loss of power ,I'm gonna try a mod on mine,and if its a success i will post the mod,gonna replace my aux and my air con belt tomorrow if i get time,it looks a right pig of a job ,will let ya know how it go's with pics. . .

hi ming,am having the same problem could you please supply the photos of the snags so i can attempt it myself,its driving me nuts.

I replaced the oil seperator after 32000 miles, i think every 12 months is a good idea. if it blocks the crankcase can pressurise (this can force oil out of the dip stick!!) BMW fit a modified seperator that will not block, fit and forget, try your local BMW dealer.

:mad:..Blew a turbo hose on me td4 last thursday,same thing, low power,some black smoke.Took her in to local LR independant(mick moore) all done in half an hour, top man. Thing is only done 50ish miles, still seems to be puffing some black smoke when accelerating :confused:.Is this normal,will it clear it'self or should i be checkin summat else?
