Hi all

Great forum by the way.

I've just bought my first Freelander and did own a rather problematic Disco a few years ago. Defected away from an Audi A4 as wanted something more practical.

Collected it from the garage last night and noticed a lack of propshaft this morning. I've spoke to the garage who says he will sort one out for me.

Its a 2003 TD4 with 109K miles. What other things should I be checking for?

Reasons for propshaft removal should be well documented on here and elsewhere online. Very unwise to buy a freelander without one in place so you'll need to make sure there are no nasty noises etc from the transmission and no excessive tightness on full lock.

The problem with the garage "sorting one out" is you have no way of knowing how old the viscous coupling is. Try and push for a recon VCU on whatever prop they fit.....

Oh dear this ain't gonna end well there's only one reason the prop shaft is removed on a ga.............. freelander, take it back and get your money back.

I agree take it straight back... and buy my defender LANDROVER DEFENDER 90 TD5 ! on eBay (end time 06-May-11 12:06:41 BST)

Update:

The guy at the garage says he used mine to replace one on another Freelander a couple of weeks ago and forgot about it!

He's putting me another one on. I'm going to insist on a refurb VCU as per "Chaser". No doubt he "forgot" hoping I'd never notice the lack of one!!

sounds dodgy

i wouldnt bother with it - just get your money back and get a better one elsewhere

yeah mate...take it back and get your dosh back... the dealer might be telling the truth but as stated before the only real reason to take it off is to get round other expensive problems.....

I think you need a clear indication such as a warranty on not only the VCU but the IRD as well - if the dealer does this then he may be genuine but if he doesn't it does suggest the prop was taken off to save the IRD.

Some are removed for economy but suspect very few.

Sounds like he was using your freelander as a box of spares, if you paid "spares or repair" price then fine but if not get a refund and buy a decent one.
