blank the EGR.
use old filtered chip oil in yer fuel

dont drive in low box

Drive it as if you have very bad brakes. Only put a bit of fuel in at a time then you will not be sayin sod it it's over half and boot it.
Stick to speed limits
Try and do yer accellerating on the flat or down hill bits
If the lights ahead are green then back off 'cause they are gonna change to red
Every yard/metre covered with your foot off the pedal is a yard extra to the gallon
Only ever squeeze the throttle never bang it down hard
Slightest bit of black smoke, even if you cant see it , is fuel wasted
Save your old engine oil and filter it then bung it in the tank next time you get fuel.
I had a Classic r.r. with Zeus gears instead of time belt,pluss a d.heater that warmed up engine before starting,and started car heater fan on low after approx 20min.
Living in Oslo it can get quite cold i n the winter ,but I never got under 30mpg ,usually around 32mgp.there was no point in frashing the old girl-she would`nt go any quicker anyway.On the A1 from Newcastle to Luton wonce or twice a yr. for 6yrs. dviving at 65-75 mph she managed 35-36 mpg,and thats not bad for a brick wall.

By allowing the engine to warm up quicker therefore using less fuel for a cold start also bit less of a load on the engine, thats the theory for a petrol engine.
Do diesels have to enrich the mixture for cold starting, I don't know, if they don't then 'warm up' is one reason out of the window

Removing the viscous fan can improve mpg for various reasons:
1. Quicker warm-ups means the engine is at it's most efficient sooner;
2. The engine drives the fan - with the fan removed the motor has less 'drag'.
3. The viscous fans can & do seize up and cause them to run all the time, forcing cold air onto the engine that it doesn't need plus being a much bigger 'drag' on the motor;
4. For 99% of the time an average Disco in good condition just doesn't need the extra cooling the viscous fan gives. If you are crossing a desert towing a trailer of 3.5tons then leave it on.
If you take it off, just be careful about checking the coolant level on a regular basis - it takes 10 secs so why wouldn't you? And keep the fan in the boot, just in case.
The two other mods for improved mpg are:
De-Catt & De-EGR total cost about £30, benefit about 3mpg.

With viscous fans I'm never quite sure if theyve seized or not. for example, on an old v8 RRC it will turn freely in a breeze ,when the engines not running,and will work o.k. and have no cooling probs when running on hot days.
But on my disco ,it does turn by hand though quite stiff, but warms up o.k.within a couple of miles on a v.cold day. Though I did think of maybe fitting a leccy one for the frequent short journeys in winter,(and for switching off in water).

Well I took the viscous fan off mine and ran it around for a while and it was fine until I got stuck in a moterway traffic jam, I had to have the heater on full blast to stop it overheating. I refitted the fan after that and bearing in mind the viscous bit is actually knackered I reckon my cars performance improved with it on.
my reasoning is it is always drawing air over my full width intercooler even when stood still or trickling along, and that improves combustion and gives better performance at low speeds. I also dint notice any difference in fuel consumption with or without the viscous fan.
far as I am concernd its staying on and the knackerd viscous coupling might just be a bonus!!!

Nope! Unless you are in traffic day in and day out or just trickling along day in and day out then the VC WILL use more fuel. TBH how long was you stuck in the traffic jam? My 200 tdi with no VC will idle all day without bring in the leccy fan in 40 + here in Spain, the 200/300 tdi rad/cooling systems have bundles of excess cooling and are so good when they are clean, is it possible your cooling system is not quite up to snuff or perhaps is partly blocked?

what makes you say your viscous is knackered? if it's locked solid it may explain why you have an overheating problem with it off. If it is locked solid I would take Dave 2000's advice and check out your rad.
