Yes I did search. Didnt find much usful info

Thinking of upgrading my battery shortly and thought I would seek some advice from you guys.

Currently has a - Varta Promotive Black 610 047 068 - which seems a little basic.

Over the coming months I will be fitting -
x2 160watt KC Daylights (yes Evil it has been that long! lol)
x1 54watt LED Flood light - Theres two already fitted
Superwinch Tigershark 9500
Amp and Sub
Various 12v fag sockets & various USB sockets

Any recommendations that would happily run all these bits and bobs?

Did want to avoid doing a dual battery set up for the moment as doesnt that require a second Alternator?

nope.

battery setups..

one battery for it all with standard alt. if you need more constant current then get a higher alt.

two batteries in parallel. they should really be the same battery and made date. this doubles the reserve and cranking power. uses one alt. winch can drain both down.

two batteries with split charger. main one to run the vehicle, second to power winch and all that. split charger means the first is protected from being drained by the winch but allows both to be charged by the alt.

two alts make more current or you can have completely separate systems or

think this is right, i don't have a winch though ;)

that winch pulls 340amps. say your alt chucks out 100amps and you have a 110ah battery in top condition. Say you only want to use 40% of it (44ah).

that's 240 amps your battery will have to give to the winch.

((44*3600)/240)/60 = 11 minutes of winch usage at full load.

however, you'll have other things on, and the alt and battery won't be 100%. i may be talking out my bottom!

Right so if Ive got this right I could buy x2 Identical batteries wire them in parallel which gives me more reserve/higher capacity power.

Which would run all the above, but both could be drained. The cheaper option

Split charge - more expensive but more reliable in the long run.

However I could run parallel batteries and then fit a split charge at a later date?

I doubt the Winch would be going on until late Feb next year, maybe. However the lights will be going on in the next 6 weeks. Is the current battery up to the task or does that need replacing anyhow? If so what is a good solid battery?

sounds about right. split charge systems aren't that much. you can diy it for under twenty quid iirc.

re the lights. work it out. let's get the amps of your new stuff

(2*160)/12=26.67 amps
(3*54)/12=13.5 amps

with your normal lights. roughly 200watts
200/12=16.67

so around 60.. but you'll have a bunch of other stuff on so why not just call it 80amps for everything.

You've got a 100/120 amp alt in a td5, so it should be fine.

Personally, I'd keep an eye on the bat and just leave it. when you get a winch, give it a go with what you have and keep an eye on it. for your usage, it might be absolutely fine. turn your lights off and other leccy bits, to give more juice to the winch.

Ok cheers mate, excellent help, very grateful. Book marked for future reference :D

So with the lot fitted and running im pretty much on the boarder line of what the car leccy can handle. Though I would like it to be more reliable etc. So save starting another thread in 4 months what would my best bet be?

Split charge using somthing like this?

NUMAX 120ah 1000amp PREMIUM Battery ( UP-GRADE) | Range Rover Sport & Discovery | eBay

i think you'll get lots of opinions. some like deep cycle marine for winches, some high cca, some gel. so you have two different types with a split charge. one to start the engine, the other for winch.

tanya website seems pretty good for prices. and everyone seems to like cxv-x for starting (or now Enduroline CXV-X)

you are only running it on the border if you turn everything on at once.. which is a bit daft. no need to have all your lights, spots, work lights, and everything else on at the same time.

seriously though, i wouldn't bother unless you plan to use it heavily. not just every now and again.

(there's also a guy selling new bats in the for sale, if you want to spend some cash ;) )

Don't forget a 100 Amp alternator (or what ever value you have) wont produce its rated output (100 Amps in this case) with the engine just ticking over (which as I assume is what it is doing when you are actually winching). Seem to have used a lot of brackets (just noticed!):)

Again thanks Trax, yeah I suppose running with everything on is stupid and not needed lol

Most likely just have the LED lights on when winching, if im winching in the dark which is unlikely.

After all this very useful info ill get a new battery when ive got some spare cash me thinks!
