I've been reading this thread;

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/building-my-own-expedition-roof-rack-181463-5.html

and it's inspired me to try my hand at a similar thing. Trouble is, I don't have a hydraulic pipe bender.

So anyone know of a 12+ ton pipe bender for sale? I've scoured ebay, and it's hard to find one new or used for under 80 quid.

(I've considered buying a 12 ton bottle jack and making my own, but it would probably be cheaper, and alot easier to just buy one if I can find one going cheap?)

I made this one without a bender, i used weld elbows ;)

Your not going to get the tight bends you want for a roof rack with anything short of a £25k mandrel bender unless you can suffer a 5" rad

welded 90 degree pipe elbows

for industrial pipe / plumbers

bss or sbs smiths brothers lots others about

You've sold the idea to me boys.
I'm gonna go for the weld elbows.

My aim is to replicate the safety devices disco roof rack, as closely as possible. I'm sure I'll have to cut corners in places (excuse the pun :rolleyes:), but should still be do - able with weld elbows, and it's a lot cheaper than buying a tube bender which would seldom get used.

Hamsterberg; how much did it cost in materials to make yours, and roughly how many metres of steel tube did you use?

Cheers for the advice.

Cant remember how many meters, think materials came to about £60-£70
