Help, thought I was being so clever and was really pleased with myself for managing to change the bearing in the tensioner pulley. Trouble is I cant put the belt back on because it just wont lift. The nut is getting knackered and if i turn it clockwise, the stud unscrews with it! Any suggestions please?

Hi ya.
Welcome.
If my memory is right put your spanner on the pulley and tighten it(anti clockwise) it will make the pulley arm move up on the spring so you can feed the belt round.

It just wont lift -that's the problem. It did when I started the job and slipped off the belt. Then undid it clockwise to take it off as per instructions somewhere on this site, only to realise that the nut wasn't coming undone but the studding was coming out. I then screwed it all back in and decided just to remove the pulley wheel to change the bearing. Got it all back together again but now can't lift the thing to get the belt back on. The 15m spanner has slipped so many times, the seized nut is getting gnarled. My hubby said I should have left it to the experts but I object to paying a fortune for just a fiver's worth of bearing! Looks like he was right though!

Hiya.
You need to have the spanner at the right angle to lift the pulley up.
Put your 15mm spanner on at the 3 'o' clock position then lift the spanner(anticlockwise)
If still too tough and your using combination spanner(I.e ring one end and open other) then make sure ring on nut then get a slightly bigger spanner and put the ring over the open end to lock in and hey presto a spanner twice as long with more leverage. The spring does have a lot of tension so give it some welly

it really does need some leaverage to get it to move. i used a breaking bar for the leaverage when i had a tdi. i was told by an experienced landy mechanic that if you can do it with just a spanner or socket then it needs replacing. theres nothing wrong in taking the stud out just be careful putting it back in. iput the bar on at 11 o clock position and pushed down with my left hand and fed the belt on with my right. if i remeber right theres a lip or something on the pulley which stops it going too far in one direction (cant remeber which, or might be totally wrong thinking about another vehicle) is this in the correct place for you

are you putting the spanner on the bolt that holds the whole pulley on or the one in the middle of the bearing. it should be the one in the middle of the bearing

I have been such a knobette!! Yes, I was trying to lift it with the wrong nut which worked when I slipped the belt off but not after I'd finished it for some reason. I like the spanner extension idea , that worked well. I hadn't realised that the main bolt wasn't a fixed bit of studding with a nut on it hence me panicking and winding it back in hard. That's when I thought it would be easier just to take the actual bearing bit off. Found a very good you tube clip on how to do the whole job, just wish I'd seen that before!
I had trouble getting the bearing out as I didn't have the correct size socket to push it out in the vice but with a bit of brute force and a hammer it came out eventually. I was then worried about getting the new one in without damaging it so went to the shed to find something suitable. Then it dawned on me - use the old bearing to push the new one in - perfect!
I am now a happy bunny and the squeek has gone -thanks for all your help guys - Janet
