My 90 kept being very hesitant to start, and sometimes not starting at all (more recently). It was totally inconsistent; not after being stood for ages, and not after long runs-it could be either. I had the battery charge checked and found it was very low. I inspected the terminals for corrosion, but there was none.

I concluded that it could be the battery (the one in was of an unknown age) so shelled out £60 for a new one. I fitted that today and at first it seemed to have done the trick.

I've just been to the airport (30 mile round trip), got back, went to fuel up, and the landy very nearly didn't start on the forecourt. I am now clueless as to what is causing the dodgy starting. It sounds just like a low battery, and yesterday required jump leads to start.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar-does anyone have any advice?

Recheck battery voltage.....if low check alternator output.....if not check earths and connections to starter.

First off re-check all of your earths!!

Next check that you are getting between 13.8 and 14.2 volts at the battery from the alternator.

Then check your starter motor ... although from what you have said, it probably isn't that.

Also do you have any extra bits of kit on it that could possibly be robbing the feed?

I don't think I've got any extra kit on that would drain it (I've definitely not added any since before the problem started).

I've checked the battery earths and they seem fine (although two washers were cracked). I put a bit of vas on to be sure but I'm pretty sure its not that. Tried starting again afterwards and it hesitates to the point where you know that in a few more starts it will fail.

I don't know where the other earthing points are to check (I'm not very experienced in these things).

As the others guys have said, it could be the alternator
If you have a voltmeter, get the engine running and use the voltmeter on the battery terminals, if its not charging above 12-13 without any lights or nothing then it could be a faulty alternator, thats all I can think of

Indeed, if its the alternator then I have no idea what to do other than take it to someone who does. I'll check the other earthing points this week (if I can find them), and if they seem to be ok then conclude its the alternator and take it to someone in the know.

Sounds like alternator. I had exactly the same problem with mine amongst many problems following the drowning. It was the bushes. Take it off and swap the bushes. Cost me £4 to fix.
