Hi I have a nearly flat battery can I just connect a 6amp battery charger to the terminals with out disconnecting battery ........ will it harm ECu etc.

If I do disconnect battery will it effect imobiliser coding and air bags etc can somebody advise....

If the battery is dead flat you'd be as well taking it off and charging it as it could be on for some time. I'm personally not a fan of charging on the car unless it's a slow trickle - max 1 Amp - otherwise you could overload delicate electrics. Normally you don't lose settings on a Freelander other than the radio maybe and the tailgate window will drop but other than that it's ok. If the battery seems fully charged after a short while then it's just taking a surface charge and it's on it's way out and needs replaced but give it a try in the first instance.

How did the battery go flat? Something left on, short winter journies or sitting for any time?

The more modern chargers start to pulse the charging voltage, once the batteries charged. The pulsing action in the charger is applying and testing the charge voltage. This can cause computer damage, as they don't like the pulsing voltage. Best to disconnect the battery from the car when charging.
