Hi guys

Ever since i bought my 1988 90 2.5td ( 200tdi ) last february it has always had a delayed turning off problem and just recently a bad starting problem aswell, convinced the two problems are connected today i replaced the ignition switch with a lucas one, anyway once we removed the ignition switch from the dash / steering column ( wires still connected ) we removed each wire one by one and connected each wire one by one to the new ignition switch and before we fitted it we gave it 3-4 seperate starts and switch off's and it worked 100% then we fitted the new ignition switch in place and gave it another 3-4 seperate starts and switch off's and again it worked perfect then i later went out shopping and the two problems came back one min it will start and turn off correctly then the next min it will take it a couple of goes till it catches then when you come to turn it off it takes a few sec's after you have taken the key out before it switches off :mad:

inbetween all this the car runs perfect and there is a new starter motor and now new ignition switch fitted, it sound's like an ignition problem to me but can't think what else it can be so just thought i would ask if anyone has had this problem before and can shed some light on it please :confused::)

i'd get your multi on the spades and see if they work correctly all the time

you could wire in a switch to bypass the ign for now.
 
Could it be the connection/ wire to the stop solenoid on the fuel injection pump? I fitted a new solenoid during my resurrection work on the mighty F989EFM as it did like you say " ran a second or too after turning ignition off". Another thought is if there's any debris in that stop solenoid, the one I took out did fall apart, I definitely had a good look before fitting new one but it wasn't the easiest of places to shove your eyeballs in. Oh that was a new ignition barrel and switch too but can't remember what make, don't think it was shiitpart.

I would put my money on that wire/connection. I suppose a way to illuminate the stop solenoid would be to run engine and the pull that wires spade off the stop solenoid, if it stops dead, as it should then it has to be something back from along that wire. If it has. The delayed stop then it has to be the fuel stop solenoid I guess??

Yeah i have unplugged the wire off the stop solenoid with engine running and ignition switched off and the engine cuts out when i pull the wire but can't understand why it works ok for a short while after fitting the new ignition switch and now its gone back to how it used to be :confused:
 
Have you tried contact spray in the barrel ? I had this with my ford ranger and it seemed to sort it !!???
 
Ok mite be barking up the wrong tree here but son phoned me last night saying he has had a text from a guy on a FB landy forum saying check the breather for rocker cover for excess oil and the boost hose as this can be causing this problem and if we don't catch it in time it could ruin the engine, is this true as there is a bit of oil round the breather pipe at the breather end but i have never hered this before only ever hered this for when the turbo lets go, what do you think :confused:

i think he's on about a turbo going.

i'd deffo be having the multi out. but if you go and pull the fuel solenoid wire, does it die instantly?

Yes if i pull the wire off the fuel solenoid with the engine running and ignition switch switched off the engine dies instantly :)

nothing to do with running on it's own oil then.

re the multi/test lamp sticking it on the pulled out fuel solenoid wire and seeing what voltage you get when ign is on/off would confirm if it's a dodgy connection to it.

Ok i will do this and see what i get but i can only do this at the weekend as son is using the landy for work so i will get back to you on this on saturday but thanks for you help as i am not very good on electrics :(

in that case, a good quick test is to lick the end of the wire :D :p

:confused:If the engine is running with the ign switched OFF, and then dies when you pull the stop solenoid wire, surely thats your prob., or am i missing something??????

nope, sounds right to me. once confirmed he just needs to follow the wire and find out why
 
Your fuel shut off solenoid is sticking, Take it off and stick a live wire from the batt. to it and see iff it pops in/out or sticks. Replace it anyway.
 
Cheers trax and mick, just to be on the safe side and not dowting either of you as others have mentioned this aswell i have just ordered a new bearmach fuel solenoid and will check out the power from the wire with engine running and switched off to see what i get, son is home tonight so i will go over and put my multimeter on it tonight and let you know later ;):D
