Hi,

We've been experiencing more and more issues with our beloved Freelander sport TD4 2005.
On and off recently we've had rear indicator issues. This was fixed in the past but i'm not sure what the garage had done to fix it.
basically, the indicator (left) makes that very fast noise, with quick flashing faint light. Other times the sound is normal speed again (but i'm not sure whether the light would appear ok - well it did appear once in the past so I assume it did)

Now I checked this morning, and well, now the fast tick tock noise is back but no light at all. All the other lights seem to work.
I know that the casing around that indicator is cracked at the top (not sure if part still exist to replace it, or whether it's caused the issue with rain etc?). Would a place like Halfords know what to do ? I can't afford hundreds of pounds on this, but equally going left is pretty dangerous for us (and other drivers).

Sounds like the bulb if not ir could be a little bit of corrosion either way you need to remove the light to sort it, they are still available or try a scrap yard.

 
Hi Artic, thanks for your reply :) When you say corrosion, you mean on the bulb or fuse ? (i know nothing about mechanics lol). thanks for the link too ! How do mechanics diagnose this? would like to avoid someone having to run diagnostics for £100? Would Halfords or ATS be able to check do you think ?
 
As Arctic says… check the bulb/s first.

The double-time flashing shows there is a problem. Normally it’s a blown bulb. If the bulbs are proven working, then check/clean the bulb holder and try again.
If none of that works, it potentially could be the relay or a wiring fault, but try the first 2 above first.

P.s. you haven’t put led bulbs in or something silly, right?

No LED bulbs there :). Ok great I’ll see if Halfords can change the bulb 💡, and order one of these indicator covers .

Just switch a bulb yourself from the other side and see what effect it has…
(Unscrew the lens and the holder will twist out to expose the bulb)

The holders go open circuit on the rear lamps. If a new bulb doesn't fix it and you feel adventurous, swap the bulb holder from the other side and then you will know without any test equipment.
 
So I took the car to Mr Clutch. They were amazing - no appointment and they took a look, removed bulb fiddled a bit then it worked. All free of charge. Sadly within 10 minutes the problem returned when I indicated left - fast clicking with faint light on front left indicator and no light at the back. The outside casing is a bit broken so I’m ordering a new one but surely that’s not the issue …. Then I remember Rovertune fixed that issue ages ago but they couldn’t fix it by normal means, something about them having to bypass the wiring / extend it or something so that the indicator wouid work again. And it did for about a year. So I guess I need to take it back to them, wasn’t cheap as they had to go right into the car ugh
 
If it worked with a bit of fiddling with the bulb it would suggest the problem is at or near the holder.
Check connections and earth are clean & secure. Buy a second-hand unit, or how difficult is it to remove otherside to slave on to test.
Don't exclude the other lamps on that side, check they are all clean and tight.
You do say outer casing is broken so it could be corrosion due to damp ?
 
Sounds like the bulb holder see my post above. Swap it for other side and if that solves it then simple and cheap to replace.
 
They have contacts on the elbow bit that break. Not sure why they are made with a contact rather than a continuous strip? Someone knows. JLR ?!?!?
