Hi i have a 200tdi discovery that when i open the back door it catches on the bottom right hand corner of the door and the rear bumper top guard plate. Can anyone tell me if there is any adjustment on the hinges or is it a case of buying new?

Can I just ask, when looking at the closed back door, which side of the bottom of the door is catching?

Hi dave thanks for the reply the part of the door catching is the bottom right corner of the door, when looking at the door with it closed.

OK Shane, then in that case, this is what I would do.

Take off the spare wheel from the back door, slacken the screws holding the hinge onto door, just one hinge at a time and that will tell you if you will be able to lift the door.

I'm assuming it's a door fit problem and not a badly fitted back bumper??

Just for your info, when I bought the TDi 300 I immediately took the spare of the back door, because there is a LOT of weight in it and I think the hinges are not up to the job.
 
Hi dave thanks for the info i have done what you said and it looks like the hinges require replacing. Also thanks to daz for the info and price of the hinges.

my 300 rear door was catching and chipping the metal... a replacement bottom hinge solved it... 5 bolts later... sorted!

support rear open door with high lift, remove bolts, replace hinge, replace bolts. easy.

Island 4x4 were cheapest, a top hinge will also fit

Hi Eric, you mean the spare wheel? I keep it at home !!!

Seriously I stopped carrying it on my "new" Disco because whilst the hinges are good now, with the weight of the spare wheel on, what I considor to be poor hinges, they will wear.

I have had no punctures in, to be honest I can't remember how many years (am I asking for it or what!!!) I always carry an aerosol can of puncture jollup but have never had to use it.

YOU COULD ALWAYS CONTACT A COMPANY CALLED PUNCTURE SEAL. THEY WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND FILL ALL YOUR TYRES WITH PUNCTURE SEAL THAT WILL FILL ANY HOLE MADE IN THE TYRE UPTO 6mm. MY TYRE SIZE IS 265/75/16 AND THEY QUOTED A PRICE OF £50 TO DO THEM ALL. ONCE DONE NO NEED FOR A SPARE.

Thanks for that Shane. Like with most things in my life I have to make choices due to financial constraints and balance things against risk.

I choose to carry a can of jollup, backed up by an excellent 'Assistance' service, built into the insurance here.

Maybe one day I'll get caught out, but not yet:eek: :)
 
Be aware that the cans of puncture seal are only any use for the type of puncture you find when you go to the car in the morning and the tyre is flat, even then you're best jacking it up and spinning the wheel straight away after "inserting" the stuff.
For a puncture whilst driving at any speed, the tyre will either have worked loose on the bead, or be completely knackered before you stop, half a dozen cans of the stuff won't sort it then, neither will they if you tear it whilst off-roading.
I work in a Motorway control room, and over the last 3 years, haven't yet found anyone who's successfully re-inflated a flat with the stuff!
The next thing is, the breakdown services either;
1) Won't even come out to you, as you don't have a spare (and your car was originally designed to carry one) OR
2) Will only recover you to the nearest available tyre depot, and they will charge you for doing so.
You MAY be lucky and get them on a good day, but the above is their normal proceedure.

Hi Dave

I realise you are if France and may not know now, but back here in Blighty isn't it a legal requirement to carry a decent usable spare?

No. and the spare if carried is no longer an MOT test item.

Good news for those of us that want to be rid of the spare then. Personally I think the Disco would look sort of naked without a spare hanging of some part of it.:D
