Hi all,

Haven't been on for a while... I'm just about to change ATF oil in my automatic gear box in my 4.6 1999 range rover. Just wondering how to get out all the oil from the system, or just get out what you can from the sump?!

Many thanks in advance...

you cant get it all out some of it stays in the torque converter you can change it a few times so the new atf will dilute the old atf oil
if yours is a 1999 there is no dipstick so fill it through the filler hole untill it runs out the hole start the engine move the gear lever through all gears a few times pausing briefly in each gear then top up again with the engine running untill it drips from the filler hole
i do mine every year , being i have changed it so often it comes out like new , the first time i changed it i drained and filled 3 times to get rid of the old oil also changed the filter and the gearbox remains silky smooth this may seem extreme but it gives me piece of mind that its done , i want to drive my range rovers not repair them, regular serviceing costs money but prevention is allways better than cure
it would pay to do the transfer box as well when you are under it
mine gets this as well also the front and rear diff

If it hasn't been done 'for a while' there's a lot to be said for not disturbing all the muck in one go. However I would suggest that you drop the sump and replace the filter.
I've never checked to see if it's standard but I found a little bar magnet in the sump by the drain hole, it was furry with the bits that must have worn off the innards in the last ten years. I know that it was ten years because the last bloke who changed the filter had written "Merry Xmas 2001" and signed it in marker pen.

The magnet is standard, mine was furry too when I last changed the fluid and filter. I have service receipts that state the fluid had been changed about every 24k miles, which is good to know.
