Much more likely to be Glow Plug light rather than Choke...seeing as its a diesel...

It's a glow plug light, you certaily haven't got any choke (manual or automatic) on a 19J 2.5TD. It should operate on the ignition switch just past the 2nd position, ie turn key to 2nd position and just a little further but not far enough to actually start the engine. If it's staying on, it's an electrical fault. It's quite possible you need a new ignition switch as the glow plugs operate directly from this without a relay.
You can get a switch from Fleabay quite cheap (around a tenner). You only need the switch for the bottom end of the barrel, not the complete ignition barrel.

It's a choke symbol purely 'cos LR designed it for a petrol engine and were too tight to change the little orange light in the diesel one. Only petrol engines need a choke, diesels use glow plugs. One other feature of the 19J engine is when you use the glow plugs, give it plenty of heat in cold weather and don't touch the accelerator until it fires, it has a cold start function on the pump that is "switched" off as soon as you use the accelerator.Another thing you could check is the spade terminal on the heater plug connection at the ignition switch. It's the biggest one near the top of the switch, a bit of a bitch to get at, but sometimes it's just a dirty/corroded connector. I'm not sure, but from memory the cable is a brown one with a red stripe down it.
It's something you need to sort, 'cos if your plugs are staying powered on it's not doing them much good and they'll quickly burn out.

Ok thanks for that... I have been doing some searching and come up with a few possible matches! All i need to know is, is there any variation in the ignition switches, most people on ebay just put whether it is for a petrol or a diesel but is there anything more specific then that i should be looking out for?
Ive had a look under the dash at the end of the barrel and there is a brown, red stripped wire leading into the back of the switch, the plastic around the spade connector does appear to be blackened so i guess that would suggest it has been left on for prolonged period of time, So to me that says it is the ignition switch you were spot on!

Yes, it must be for the 2.5 or 2.5TD 19J engine.They're the only ones with the glow plug feed directly from the ignition switch. If in doubt message the seller before buying with the details of your vehicle, they should be able to advise you that it's correct or not. It'll pay to change the spade terminal as well. I'm fairly certain it's a 6.3mm Yellow size connector. Again cheap on Ebay or in an Oddpak from your local motor factor.
Make sure when you change the switch you put each cable back in it's correct position or you'll have a whole heap of trouble trying to figure out the right connections later.
If you've been successful, you're orange glow plug (choke) light will only come on when you turn the key just past the 2nd position but before turning the engine over. You have to manually hold the key in position until you've given enough heat to fire up the engine, (usually around 20 seconds if cold, around 5-10 seconds in summer, though they can be bloody temperamental on starting, bless 'em).
Make sure when you change the switch you put each cable back in it's correct position or you'll have a whole heap of trouble trying to figure out the right connections later.

Ok, so i have the new ignition switch and have fitted it. So just passed the second position the glow plugs turn of, On the second position the glow plugs are on. When the engine is started the key falls back to the second position so therefore the glow plugs remain on, Im i missing something? is this supposed to happen? Would it be something to do with the wiring? For example, if two wires happened to be in the wrong position the glow plugs would be on in the second key position and off just after? on a tdi glow plugs come on as you describe wuth the activation of a relay so when switch returns glow plugs are no longer activated until ignition switched off then on,2.5 td should have sprung part of switch that you hold key against just before cranking position so once started switch falls back past glow plug position

wired to wrong outlet, test for right one thats live when key held against spring and off when released

Yes you are right! It appears the original owner did not bother replacing the ignition switch when it began to stop turning the glow plugs on in the, just after the second position, position. Instead he removed a wire that he thought not to be necessary, and cut of the original spade connector for the glow plugs, downsized it so it will fit onto the other connection, and left it there. It means he had power to the glow plugs, but it also ment the power is constant. I identified the correct connection on the ignition by simply touching the glow plugs to it, and hey presto, they come on in the, just after the second position, position.
So thanks for all you help, if everything goes to plan, I just need to replace that spade connector back to its original and correct size. I believe the spade connector to be a 35A one. thanks all, Adam
