I have just had my 2001 Disco II 2.5 auto diesel up on a ramp to try and get to the bottom of an incessant leak I have had niggling away for a while now.

It apears that there is transmission fluid coming from either end of the autobox.

Are there gaskets which can become perished with age at either end of the gearbox? The sump gasket looks fine and isn't leaking from what I can see.
Or can anyone suggest what might be causing this?

I have read that it may be as simple as a loose oil cooler pipe which is loose on here a moment ago but would like to hear of anything else it may be before I go and have a go at it again later.

I have had a few leaks which I've slowly been getting the better of (fuel reg, etc) and would love to finally leave my drive without coating it in black stuff each time I park up for the night.

As usual, any help or suggestions very much appreciated.

I've done a bit of delving into the forum history and looked at a few other sites also since I posted original query.

It appears there is a gasket kit for the ZF automatic gearbox which is on the series 2 td5that I have.

Does anyone know if the prices being quoted of around the £105 mark online is reasonable? For some gaskets I find this expensive (PART NUMBER STC4449) And how long this might take me to do myself? Will the entire gearbox have to come out? Or can it be done in situ at all?

I don't fancy giving my hard earned cash to some gready LR dealer if I can help it!

Thanks.

I cleaned everything on the underside and it didn't look as if the pipes were problematic. It looked like the fluid was coming from the joins between the gearbox/transmission and the gearbox/sump.

Will need to get under again and give it another try. I was just wondering how probable it was that the gaskets were leaking?

Many thanks Lew. I appreciate your advice. Have had a wee look at the discovery2 website and his tutorials on all the fixes he has done are pretty impressive.

My disco has done just under 112,000 miles, so although is getting on a bit, it's not near as many as a lot of other ones still going strong.

I'll check more thoroughly the likelyhood of it being the pipes as this does seem to fit the bill regards my leak.

Thanks again.
