Hi

I hit a kangaroo and the mechanic says that the Auto transmission cooler, fan and shroud need to be replaced. He and I can't find a replacement in Australia. Have been looking at universal replacements and am unsure of what would fit.

The car is 120 km from home, and I thought that the Auto transmission cooler could be bypassed just so I could get the car home and fix it myself. Does this seem reasonable (to bypass the cooler)?
 
Don't know the answer to that one - but can't you hire a trailer and ask a buddy to tow it home? 120kms isn't that far unless its particularly hilly where you are. Or if you're a member, get the AA to transport it home - they transported one of my cars 400kms home when it expired in the middle of nowhere once.

Thought I was going to take out a Hawk today, it swung down and was coming right at me till it flew up at the last minute. They don't half look big when they're coming at you like that - not on the scale of a Roo though.

It is pretty flat in the Mallee.
RACV count hitting a roo as an accident, so they won't do it. The roo bounced across the road in front of me, got safely to the other side, then turned around and came back. The lower left front bumper hit his head despite my trying to avoid him. I was towing about 2 tons, so he had no chance. Never hit a roo before, and don't want to do it again.
I find sounding the horn keeps birds out of the way.
A friend is coming up from Melbourne in a couple of weeks and will tow me if all else fails.
 
You can't drive in the UK without the transcooler installed. You definitely can't in Australia without destroying the trany. I think that you have the hot climate additional cooker fitted. These weren't fitted in all parts of the world.
If you can rig up a universal engine oil cooler of a similar size? Then that would work. You would also need to rig up some kind of fan too. This would be the best bet, as a temporary measure. ;)

Thanks for replying, and the tip. Thought that since we are going into winter it would be ok.
I don't know what what size the universal transcooler should be. There seem to be plenty of options around, with many having a fan attached.

Measure the physical dimensions of the damaged cooler and select something similar in size. Most fluid/air coolers capacity chosen by rows. You can count the rows of vanes, to get a good idea of the replacement's capacity requirements. (Yours looks like a 24 row cooler)
If you are worried, find something larger in dimension that still fits in the space available. A booster fan is a must too.

Looking at the pic, there must be about 20 vanes. I can't get to the garage to check the dimensions and count the number of vanes, and the mechanic is being uncooperative (which is one reason for getting the car out of his hands).

You're quoting part numbers and workshop manuals for the Freelander 1 - the F2 is a completely different beast. I presume the auto box and accessories for it will be very different.

If I understand it correctly, the light blue unit in the pic is a heat exchanger part number UBC000070 (which I don't need). I will try searches relating to transmission air blast cooler.

The picture I added was just ment as an example of what you could do.

It's not your actual model of Freelander. It is actually for the FL1. As is the picture you linked. To be honest. The FL1 blast cooler does look very similar to the FL2 unit. I doubt that it would be a direct replacement. But would probably do the job, if you can find one.
