drivin down m'way today and lost transmission, i know little about auto boxes so any help to diagnose whats needs fixing would be v.much appeciated :)
Its a 97 3.9 auto disco 1

It doesn't have to be the auto box that is at fault.

Does it move in diff lock?

Does it move if you select 1,2 or 3 rather than just D? Does it move in R but not in D?

On my (almost brand new) TDi300 it was the transfer box. There was a bit of warning though.

I dont know a great deal about gear boxes i must admit, but have always been told for any gear box fault first replace the oil as causes most problems

no movement in any gear at all, i had it pressure tested and there was no pressure, oil was drained from the sump and that was in a poor state after being changed a few ago.

Have you flushed the box with fresh ATF and tried the pressure test or driving it again?

No, oil was changed 3 weeks ago, mech next door reckoned the oil i drained off strongley suggested burnt out box
