A real no Brainer on auto fluid change i had my car from stratstones stoke-on-trent and they really should have done a fluid change in the auto box at 6 years old ,But now it is upto me to have it done , they have quoted £150 . i went yesterday to a a garage they use to fix the auto boxes ,Auto box or archway garage of Longton they quoted £50 odd should i really thnk about it I still have 2 months landrover warrenty left and will be getting a vat reg reciept.

I would go with the £50 one. £150 is shocking for what amounts to 1 hour labour and a gallon of fluid. It won't affect your warranty so long as they use the landrover equivalent fluid, Texaco N402.

I got mine done this week for about £60 at Promec, thats with me buying the fluid myself, Carlube ATF-U.

I did mine myself a couple of months back and posted a thread about how I did it - there are lots of others too including Hippo's excellent pics to identify the level plug and drain plug.

It was easier than I thought.

You don't really need ramps - you could just drive onto 4 bricks - one brick under each wheel would do it. Safe and cheap.

Like you - I had several choices.

Buy the fluid from LR and do it myself - under £60
Buy the cheaper Car-Plan stuff and DIY - approx £35
Buy fluid and get an indy garage to do it - £110
Get the dealer to do it - £150

I chose to do it myself - albeit slowly because I wanted to be 100% sure it was done properly. The dealer screwed it up last time and blamed an apprentice. Wrong fluid and wrong level - I knew with 5 miles something was wrong.

Also it depends how fit you are - I'm not - bad back - but took it easy. Nothing really strenous involved.

Singvogel.

ATF-U exceeds Texaco 402 by quite a margin !!

Do it yourself if you can, I am 68 years old now and do all my own servicing, you know its been done right , and cheaper , you can do all servicing more often as you are not paying dealers silly money to change oils, make 4 ramps from wood to drive your landy on to to get a little more height to work under.

Regardless of who does yer jatco auto oil change, make sure they knows how to do it propper. And that also includes undoing the correct bolts.

With my back I try to do as little as possible but I would do it myself but at £50 i do not think it is worth it and a warranty and i trust this garage they have been in the same place for about 40 years, plus I damaged my shoulder last January and i find pulling on spanners realy hurts it

It's a higher spec alternative to 402, it's synthetic which is lots better than the mineral based fluid LR sell ;) Carlube ATF-U is what i put in mine!! I also posted that picture ;)

Surely it is dubious practice to mix synth & non synth together?

They mix ok as I understand the mineral base does tend to down grade the synthetic spec some what. You get the same with engine oils. If your engine is filled with synthetic and you top up with mineral. This Carlube ATF-U does say it's compatible with 402 which is a mineral based fluid and incidentally is as far as I can tell no longer made!!
