Anyone know how easy it is to change the gearbox oil in an auto 300TDi? I've heard it's not an easy thing to do but really need to change mine for peace of mind.

just undo bung on box sump ,and catch 4.5 litres ish ,refill through dipstick ,run engine and go through gears just enough you feel it pull in each place in neutral leave engine running check adjust level,to change oil screen in box you would need to remove box sump and using torx t27 bit undo screen ,not forgetting to refit 2 o rings back with new screen

Thanks for your help. Might just replace oil and not worry about filter as heard this can be fiddly.

It's very, very straightforward. You'll need at least 5ltrs of Dexron IID or III; a large container to collect about 4.5ltrs of waste oil; a tool to get the oil into the 'box (I use a 500ml syringe).

Empty out the old oil after warming up the vehicle by undoing the small allen screw sump plug - leave to drain for at least 30mins, the longer the better.

Then locate and remove the level/fill plug (1/2" plug) and put in as much oil as you can get - approx 2.5ltrs - then start the engine; put the transfer box in neutral and cycle through all auto positions (pausing 2-3secs in each one) and back to P.

Now put more all into the 'box, perhaps 2ltrs or until the autobox dipstick shows full. Then refit the fill plug and enjoy the warm glow of being able to DIY !!!

There is no fill plug on a 300tdi. You fill through the dip tick tube as James M said

If you are going to change the filter screen you will need to remove the offside gearbox mounting to get at some of the sump bolts, also unbolt and shift the cross member enough to get the sump off.
When you refit the sump, if you have problems keeping the seal around the edge of the sump in place, smear Vasaline rather than grease on to hold it.
