All the big challenge guys use auto td5s. Auto is great for power delivery and you never lose momentum with the clutch down.
There is a difference between standard 300 and highly tuned td5 though, but the principle is the same and I bet you'll find it excellent.
I would still be happier in manual, because it's simpler box, but I'm told auto is the future (I just need to try it before I can believe it!)

i think in general those of us that drive manuals are happy with what weve got ,those in autos are happy as well.....
with no idea of the drivers skill level or what "m thinking of going off road in my 300tdi auto. " actually entails id suggest you try it with what youve got until your skill develops and you consider the vehicle is your limiting factor. then youll realise that the gearbox comes way down the list of things to modify or improve......

Auto is fine as long as you don't do what a friend of mine did. Whilst guiding him down a steep slippery slope. He moronnically came over the top in Drive & nearly drove straight over me. use 1 or 2 to limit the vehicles speed and prevent it from changing up. apart from that they are just as capable as a manual vehicle..

My 200 manual has been my offroader for years and I have found it superb. No complaints.
My 300 auto is my daily drive but I took it offroad and laning a month or so back while doing an assesment for Wales 4x4 response and I was stunned at how good it was offroad.
Never in the wrong gear and a fantastic power/torque delivery. Yes downhill can be interesting if not ready for it, i.e. get it in 1st low and lock the diff if appropriate, and be ready to feather the brakes if you need to.

I have 300TDi auto and it's great for off-roading, but you must select a gear similar to what you'd do in a manual, don't just use "D"
The only slight whinge that I have is that 1st gear (even in low) is too high a gear for serious downhills, were-as in a manual it'll hold it back, in the auto you'll need to use the brakes as well.
New off-road drivers will enjoy it to, as they can concentrate on where they're going rather than if they're in the correct gear or stalling just at the wrong time. g for it!

Early days for me but I know the co ordinator in my area very well through the West Wales 4x4 club as I trial with them and a lot of the members are also in the west wales 4x4 club as well so don't anticipate any issues.
From joining I didn't hear anything for a long time but I understand they were going through structural changes as the memsec had home/health issues to get through. Thats all been sorted now.
I had to attend a drivers assessment day which was in Mid Wales (Llanerchindda Farm) where they went over the kit I was carrying and made any recomendations for additional kit etc, then they took us out in convoy to see how we drove both on roads and green lanes, then it was a return to the farm and onto the offroad course to check the basics like steep decents and failed hill climb and that was it. We had plenty time so we went laning in the afternoon for a bit of fun.
