Do you lose the V8 burble? or any power?

What kind of MPG vs cost can be expected compared to a 200/300tdi?

have heard mixed reviews about the rover 3.5 V8 onLPG some say its bad others say get it done by a reputable company and its all about the timing.

Answers on a postcard please :D
 
I have the opportunity to buy a nice 110 chassis cab with a choice of body and with only 13K legit miles on it. Couldnt come at a better time to be honest as im selling the 90.

Im just worried about the MPG on the still shiny V8 under the bonnet. I was thinking LPG as im going to get a hi cap pick up rear put on it if i have it.

Just wondered if it was worth it tis all :)
 
35p a mile in the disco on derv so go figure……….


V8 works out more or less the same on petrol or cheaper on LPG, one of the reasons I'll be getting rid once the series is running

I had a 3.5 on LPG and it was ok. Needed to advance the timing to run on gas and retard it back again for petrol, had marks on the dizzy so I could do it quick.

Did about 12 to 15 on gas and about the same on petrol, I was using fork truck propane bottles but its all the same stuff.

Carbs dried up if run too long on gas and float needles would stick,

Sounded the same on gas as it did on petrol and power about the same if timing adjusted. Never had 20mpg like some folk even on a run lucky to get 15 but it did have 4.6 heads and cam in it.
 
Should be better if its an efi engine if not easy to convert over, noisy has a spare manifold and ECU he might trade you for the carbs or I may trade my spare if they're SU's
 
the other thing is i know next to nothing about diesel engines and alot less about v8's

How many cylinders is it again! :doh: :D
 
just unbolt the inlet and put a new one on with new gasket :p get someone to label the wires and away you go

dont forget the notches in the inlet ports for injectors
 
I've got a 3.9 v8 on lpg it does 300 miles ish on 60quids worth of gas.
It sounds gorgeous on both gas and petrol and I think it does loose some power on lpg but not much. Doesn't feel as powerfull as u pull away. I use it in and around the city and haven't really been on a long run. But 60quid does around 300miles in my rangey... Tom
 
My Rangie is on gas, it's got the same if not more power on gas and it runs better on gas as that's the way the engine has been tuned, I get 160 miles to £46 which isn't horrendous for the pleasure of the power and the rumble :)
 
I had a RR V8 with quite a simple gas system. I spent a lot of time trying slight adjustments until I reached the stage where it ran better on gas than on petrol. I also have a 200TDI Discovery, and found fuel costs were the same. The V8 used twice as much fuel as the 200TDI, but it cost half the price. If you are prepared to spend time getting it right, gas seems to suit the Rover V8 very well, even on a simple LPG system.
 
I have a Disco 1 3.9 V8 Auto on LPG around 11mpg daily with LPG around 79p/litre.

Yes it feels a bit down on power, you have to push the pedal a bit harder, on petrol it was getting around 15-18mpg.

Noise is nice, but if you enjoy the noise it will easily be single figure MPG.

Mine is a full sequential set up and has to be at a certain temp before the LPG will switch, usually with in 3-4 mins of driving if not before.
 
My Disco 2 runs on ye olde LPG, as a general rule im gettin 175miles per 46ish quids worth if just doin short stop and start runs, the most ive got in cold weather on a long run is 205miles which was last saturday, get more miles to the tank full in the summer when weathers warmer, i havnt noticed any drop in power on mine, still sounds like a V8 and still pulls like a V8 so im well happy with mine :)
 
Thats the other thing, after having a look through google is the amount of different systems out there. :confused:

The only other thing to worry about is waterproofing it.
 
hi BGB i used to have a 3.5 v8 110 csw and the burble definatly stays and as for mpg we used to get just over 17 on petrol just under 17 on lpg and we changed the plugs to ngk titaniums i think because lpg breaks down the plugs at a faster rate because of the leaner cleaner burn so rather than changing plugs every 10 or 20 k we found we were changing them every 5 or 10 k but it used to run nice no real loss of power it was lovley to drive

v8 has to be something you really want ,lpg makes it cheaper ,but is a pain in the arse as well if using it regular , tank in the way , trying to find lpg when you travel ,v8s take more looking after to keep running well if used to just oil change and filter with a diesel , i run a disco with lpg for 10 years wouldnt go back from a td5
 
my mate is running his V8 RRC on LPG sounds sweet dont lose the v8 BURBLE at all.

roughly gets 100miles off of his tanks which is £40 quid but if he runs out he can always switch over to petrol and run like that till he finds a petrol station that does LPG

I think thats sense there james. I have been re searching all day and alot of people said the same thing.

I might stick with diesel to be honest as at least i have a basic knowledge of how they work. I would have to read a book on a V8.

And wif all do respect to the good doctor i dont want to end up with a project on me hands.
