wanted to fit a tow bar to the freelander, so as usual evil bay got searched, found a secondhand unit with the plug attached for £30, well it took a bit longer to arrive, but it got here in the end, and was in far better condition than the picture had shown, complete with all bolts too, took a couple of hours to fit,and plug into the rear loom



so today I dragged the trailer out, as I had read on here that another flasher unit needed adding, but no, plugged in and everything works as it should, indicators flash at correct speed, RESULT, now just need to find a local cheap small caravan....... yes Im coming e bay
 
The only difference with the towing relay is an extra wire that flashes the trailer symbol on the dash. To comply with towing regulations you need that or a sounder. I have a sounder in mine with the standard relay.
 
thanks for the heads up on that, in all honesty the tow bar was fitted for one trip only, needing to pull a caravan into our woodland, once done its doubtful I'll ever use it again, the trailer we have was for the vitara and is now used as a log store, so I'll take my chances on not fitting anything else I think

There is a basic check of 7-pin sockets, but 13-pin sockets will be subject to a full electrical connectivity check and incorrectly connected or inoperative circuits will result in failure.
What is / is not required?

Type Approval Markings are not required to be tested. Your tow bar will not fail the test if they are not present.
The tow bar electrics and sockets are now a part of the test. If there is a fault, you will be advised to get the issue fixed.

so I'll wait till next years tests,
 
well, it did half the job so far, just bought a small 3 berth caravan from braintree and towed back to grays lovely, once we have changed a few bits it'll get towed over to kent and job done
