So after a few outings in my 90 since changing the steering bars to hd bars I noticed my wheels were pointing outwards away from the truck slightly. Ive adjusted the tracking so the wheels are straight by eye but now I have death wobble over 40mph. I know the tracking needs to be done properly but I'd have thought setting the wheels fairly straight would have made things better. I had no death wobble before when there wheels were all over.. Could it be coincidence that it's anything else I need to check?

Is it actual death wobble? As in the steering wheel almost shaking itself out of your hand and vibrations through the entire car? Is the panhard rod ok?

Get your tracking checked properly (and don't go to KwikFit etc!)

Try a truck type place, they may be more used to doing 'heavier' vehicles ...
Had a friend once took his to a local 'car repair' place and they chewed the rods with Stilsons to adjust the tracking ...

Ha, I remember the first time it happened to me, Nottingham ring road, absolutely crapped myself - slammed on the brakes and all was well. P/rod bushes were absolutely knackered but it never caused an issue on insa saharas. I'd changed to road tyres the day before.

I'm not far from you disco....

My panhard rod bushes were that fooked that when I undid the bolts and pulled the bar the middle of the Bush fell out. I also changed the power steering box which I'm surprised the old one didn't kill me, the bottom bolt and arm move around 10mm in all directions.. After all that she ran beautiful with minimum play. However since adjusting my tracking and that's the only thing I've done, now I have death wobble... I might put the wheels back to being way out... Haha

Ah yes, and a similar age too. What is the spec for the tracking? I just set mine by looking down the face of the front wheel to the face of the rear wheel.

Your supposed to toe them out by a mm or two I just looked down mine. Might measure them or toe them out a bit more.. I initially removed the track rod end and thought I hadn't tightened it enough but when I checked it was pretty tight...

Swivel pre-load is a favourite for wobble ...

If you are happy little spanner chucker use the string method for measuring between the front wheels ... or a pole of good length, ( they're more expensive than Ukrainians) ...
Set it either dead ahead or a degree or two toe out... as has been said ... :D

Had the death wobble in mine, I layed a f**king egg the first time it happened, pulled over and checked my wheels were tight etc!! Turned out to be the swivel pre-load in the end.

I had a similar problem. On mine it was the wheels out of balance, coupled by worn steering column UJ's. The vibration of the wheels was movinh through the column and exaggerating the play in the colum UJ's

Also, Do you guys check your swivel preload with the seals on? I know the WSM says to remove them. But is it really necessary?
