hi all, just bought a 2004 td4 yesterday. drives good except today whilst sitting and revving it is chucking out a lot of black smoke. ive read enough posts here to see that its either a hose or filter issue generally but the receipts that came with the car history show that the egr hoses were changed back in january following an mot.. or egr hose and intercooler hoses not the same thing...if so do they really split that quickly?

i got the car part exing my 3 series bmw and got it at a pretty suspicious price. like i say, it drives good, quite nippy, transmission seems to be doing all that it is supposed to..

the smoke isnt pouring from the car and i cant see it as i drive. seems to be a pretty trivial matter on these cars? possible slight knock in the engine though im not sure as im not used to td4s chatter yet.

yes they can split quickly the small one is usually the one that goes first but the long one (top left) usually rubs on a screw underneath get some later ones they are much better DLH I think on ebay and get the better clips not the thin jubilee clips

Teddy's memory is failing him tonight - it's DPH - Derby Performance Hoses.

There will be 2 or possibly three turbo/intercooler hoses and if one goes the others wont be far behind.

And the filter that can cause smoke when clogged up is the usual pcv one.

Get a BMW Oil Separator one as on most BMW 2 litre M47 engines.

Do a search and all will be revealed.

i have been reading up on this crank case breather filter too and looking for one on ebay... i do have a 3 series bmw manual somewhere as i just part exchanged one for the freelander. is it right that you basically swap the filter for a valve type separator then? i'll be watching to see if these hoses are collapsing or have any leaks. i recognise one hose already from the DPH pics-the short one at the front driver side..mine is flimsy, covered with woven cloth and very barely sort of balancing itself magically in position with some jubilee clips as costume jewelry! ... though thats more likely coming from the airbox..will take a look there also.. sorry i am quarter muppet.

No worries courierdude.

The big pipe on the drivers side is not a problem - that's the air intake. Yes it is a bit flimsy (understatement) and lots of do replace it - but it wont give you any smoke - even if it falls off.

You're more likely to have problems with the other side where there is a 90degree bend pipe going into the EGR.

To check the turbo hoses get someone to hold the revs around 2500 - at that speed the hoses should be under some pressure and hard - if they are squishy then they are clapped out. Check for leaks and splits that look as if they were done with a Stanley knife. Feel all around for air/a bit of oil escaping especially from the back of the 90degree one.

The original pcv on these engines was a cotton filter job like a mini loo-roll.
If it blocks with crud then you get black smoke. the definitive test is once the engine is warmed up, to very slowly withdraw the dip-stick. There should be NO oil coming up the tube and no pressure at all to be released.

The BMW update part is a plastic insert which cannot block. It costs £23 from any BMW parts dept. LandRover don't stock it.

i checked my hoses today and they looked in good shape and were nice and firm. i havnt got the right torx bits to get to the crankcase breather filter but i havnt got this build up of pressure squirting me from the dip stick holder. engine oil is a bit low. i'll run some redex through the injectors tomorrow but it doesnt look like the hoses are an issue..?

Has it got a temperature sensor on the short intake hose right at the front left of the engine, drivers side? If it has, take the plug off and clean the contacts, also prize the terminals closer with a small electrical screwdriver for better contact, and replace plug. I had this fault earlier on this year, lots of black smoke.

it does have the sensor yes-i'll have a go at that while im waiting for the torx bits. is the plug a standard bmw part or just some generic fitment? thanks for that
