on the 200/300 tdi there are a lot of interchangeable parts..the td5 is a different kettle of fish all togetheras chris tarrant says "its only easy if you know the answer" or words to that effect .
hence i didnt know the answer so asked.
i was under the assumption that parts from one landie may fit another . but thanks for letting me know they dont wiltshire ladyman

If you knew your stuff and were a competent engineer you could no doubt make it fit but it would probably be way to expensive a project.
You'd need to fabricate mounts, find the correct pulleys and belts, alter the wiring etc. Never say never but be realistic. Quicker and cheaper to get the correct alternator. JMHO
