Hi ,
Appreciate a bit of guidance , need a new alternator for my early 2.5 petrol , and there seem to be 2 types of 45amp available - 115-45 amp & 127-45 amp , the 115 is described as " Machine sensed" non a/c whist the 127 has no additional comments - there is a price difference , wondered what was the actual difference ? , and which should I be getting ?

do you have 3 wire plug or single wires with eyelets

Single multi plug with 3 wires - 2 thinish , one thicker - Steve

115 type though you can alter wiring to fit other

Hi ,
When I looked at the fitting it looked like the 115 was the right fit , but because the engine is not the original - a 2.5 in a series 3 , and the wiring has been made up, I wondered if it was actually the right type for the engine - the machine sensed bit is what confused me , The route problem is the ignition light staying on until I blip the accelerator hard . I've checked the contacts & earths - all good , so was going to change the alternator , then when I saw 2 types wondered if that could be the issue. Having read a previous thread I see that the difference in type is how they read voltage & know when to charge - Machine from the regulator , standard from the battery , the preferred option seems to be regular battery sensed , wonder if that could be the problem ? , and changing alternator & wiring could be the solution . I think I need to keep investigating before spending

the wiring is the same on all the trucks, ive never had an issue fitting any defender alt on any of the engines

what out put is there if you put a multimeter on positive battery terminal and neg to car

Would need a multi meter first to find out , am still recovering from a broken leg at the moment so it could still be a few weeks before I get out under the bonnet & take your advise and really start looking into it , hence just trying to do laptop research at the moment.

Its a 127 you need isn't it? Brown plug , 3 wires , little wire clip to hold the plug on?
Lucas 127 on mine.

Im sure the 2.5 petrol would have used a 127.

The A115/45 also has a plug with three wires. I've just replaced the one on my 1985 2.5NA. If you get a meter, and your current alternator is putting out enough volts, the battery may be past its best.

Best deal I could get was from eurocarparts. They had new pattern or reconditioned Lucas options.

I took mine to an auto electrical place in town, cost 35 quid to have it reconned.

from memory, I paid £38 for a pattern one. I've stripped my original for spares. It was going to be rebuilt - before I cracked the casing removing the last bearing. Bugger.
