when me alt belt snapped last week we only had a discovery 200 tdi spare belt not a defender belt..

the discovery belt was a lot shorter and a lot thicker we got it on by moving the adjuster arm around on the mounting bracket and moving alternator over..

thing is whether its just coincidence i dont know but its kickin out over 16v now..with the discovery belt on

will the belt make any difference to the way the alternator operates?
or is it just the voltage regulator not working, the alts only 1 week old

i dont think the belt will make it over charge its just the drive system just make sure the belt is not over tight whats the volts at the back of the alt ?

The belt won't have caused that, the alt is goosed, 14.4v max - or near enough.

Just a note, the only way you could have changed the speed of the alt would be by changing the pulley diameter, also think of the revs the engine can run at, say 750-4300, the alt still puts out 14.4v, so a few extra rpm isn't going to up the voltage at all, they are regulated.

However it does sound like your regulator is failing, as the battery charges back up after a start, the amperage will decrease and the voltage will go up, but it is not getting regualted, run lots of electric stuff when the voltage goes up to try and calm it a bit - it will fail soon and may damage the battery and some electrical stuff on the way, get it checked out ASAP.
