Good evening,
My alternator belt turned into a flock of noisy budgies this morning, when I got to work I had a look and it had started dropping to bits.
I bought a genuine Land rover one and have managed to get it on eventually but it was tricky due to me being unable to get enough movement of the alternator. I undid the front bolt and the adjusting one. Should I have undone the rear one? If so how do you get a spanner or socket to it? needless to say I can't get it to budge back to where it was as a piece of wood and a gentle hammer helped in getting it moved inwards to get the belt on.
I can't see anywhere to get some purchase on it to prise it back and get a bit more tension in the belt.
Thanks for any suggestions... I lack brute force but my hands are small :D

Iirc the genuine belt is a funny width so even if its the same length as the old one the alt will need to be closer to the crank pulley, its a **** design but not as **** as the disco 200 version!
In the end I removed the genuine belt and went back to cheap one and its been fine since.

Pic see how the genuine belt is slightly to fat?

Thanks Lynall,
Yes that's how mine looks now, apart from I don't have all that 'stuff' missing from round the area... maybe thats the only way to get into the alternator to move it....

I threw all my stuff away makes life a doddle, in fact its been gone for so long I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it, best of all you sit on the rad frame with feet on the axle to work on the engine.
I also fitted a cheap 16 inch elec fan from ebay years ago but its not needed unless you work it hard off road at slow speed.
Sadly like any v-eblt it needs constant tlc to stop it squealing and the pas belt is a pita as well, to loose squeals like a pig and to tight you shear the pas pump shaft off.

Well I had another bash today as the new belt wasn't tight enough. I took the air box thingy off and managed to get the alternator to move and get some tension on the belt...I had a classic mini previously and think there was more room round the engine as than there is in the 90... Thanks for your photo and advice.
