Hi everyone,
Just got an 04 TD4 and it ran well for the first couple of weeks, apart from a little white smoke on startup.
Decided to treat it to Wynns injector cleaner.....fine for a coupe of days then the black smoke started just occasionally up hills or on brisk acceleration especially on the motorway.
Nothing new here then, or that has not already been discussed over and over on this excellent forum.
HOWEVER how about his for a puzzler......as soon as the MIL comes on the black smoke and the sluggish acceleration disappears !!! the light eventually goes off and the black smoke re-appears immediately, along with the hesitation.
Yesterday I did 35+ miles up the M5 from Exeter to Bridgwater and managed to keep at a steady 75mph 'ish and kept the MIL on all the way with no smoke and no hesitation.
Any suggestions as to the cause of this absurd situation would earn my eternal gratitude, as it will keep me awake again tonight !!!!

welcome to the site trevor, and to the new hobby of running a landrover freelander, its a great motor, you thought you was just going to drive it dint you lol, you will need a sense of humour, a big wallet or a good tool kit .
first off check all the turbo hoses they can split and cause exessive smoking

let us know what you find

+1 fantastic machine....only it likes attention.
Listen for whistling/whooshing noises when accelerating which point towards split hose. Your symptoms may also suggest dirty crankcase breather filter....common problem and easy to sort....do a search and youll find plenty info.
Another possibility is MAF sensor failing, im thinking this because of the way the engine smoothes out once MIL comes on which may be because ECU has detected dodgy MAF reading and is switching to default driveable mode and it then appears to run normal. If MAF flickers back to life again it possibly trying to change back then sensor falls over again.
Sure youl have it fixed in no time......good luck

Hi
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, not my first FL so should have known better!! The first one blew a turbo hose off on the way home from collecting it brand new from Taunton Land Rover!!!!!
However pulled off the turbo hoses today and low and behold the last one off.... the small one 90 degree had a split in it.
Top marks to John saved me loads of time and probably money.
New one ordered and will be fitted asap and I will report back on the result.
Thanks once again

Just the lack of satellites in the satnav , the boot box full of water, the slow puncture and the powerful smell of inappropriate air freshener to tackle now :):):)

good that you found a split hose , not to costly,

the water in the boot is another common issue, take a look at the door seal, run a cup full of water down the seal and watch where it goes, paying particular attention to the joint at the bottom, if its running inside at that point, just cut a few mm off the end of the seal and problem solved
