My Disco air suspension is making me pull my hair out. I have trawled the boards and feel I know just about all there is to know on these air suspensions but nothing explains what I am seeing. Most times the suspension is fine but perhaps once in every ten engine stops, the right hand rear drops virtually to the stops within 30 seconds. The remainder of the time it stays up permanently (one week+). On start up, the height recovers rapidly. There is no pattern to when it drops on park-up but it is becoming very annoying. The height sensors looked damaged and so I replaced them, but the problem remains. I had thought of an airbag or pipe leak but can't detect anything and also would have thought that a leak would have caused the suspension drop each park-up, possibly at varying degrees but not within 30 seconds sometimes and not within a week the next.

I am at a loss as to what to try next and any ideas from anyone would be gratefully received.

Many thanks, in advance.

Sounds like a air bag leak , mine did the exact same thing., would stay for weeks then just go down in sceonds at random times but always on the same side. I tried the washing in soapy water but could not find my leak , so then I got it on level ground and undid the battery to rule out anything electric , stood on the back bumper and bounced it . It went straight down . So replaced my air bags ( very easy to do ) not a prob since + it rides so much better .

hi just had the same thing on mine on the near side been going down at random times for the last 2 months some times it stays up for 7 days or more some times I park up and it goes down in minutes I had convinced myself that it was not the air bags. how wrong can you be after going through all the forums the first thing they all say is air bags changed the bags 2 weeks ago no problems since tom :D

yes, these intermittent symptoms are 99% of cases caused by leaky bag(they have the abbility to seal themselves from time to time) ... they must be ruled out in the first place and ASAP cos in time this issue will affect the compressor and you may loose it.

mine just did the same, couldn't get my head around the problem, changed both bags as that is what you should do, problem gone!!! been ok since,

sounds the same as my prob doing my head in , just fitted new bag ,now wont pump up , could it be the compressor ? was always managing to go up eventualey , now cant rule out it was old airbag, have checked fuses , all seems ok

maybe due to the leak the compressor exceeded it's duty cycles and then the ECU needs a reset as it blocks the compressor to protect it.

just to rule it out swap relays R5(SLS) with R3(headlamp wash) for test...when you say "checked fuses" you mean fusible link FL9 too? ...cos that's relevant here

thanks will try the swap , how do you reset ecu if need be please ?

you need tester for that to erase the "duty cicle exceeded" fault codes

Hi again mmm sounds more complicated than i thought , have found height sensor got broken fixing to arm so going to replace with a new one , then will get compressor checked out i guess , thanks for advice , very helpfull was easier when i had my series 3 lanny

as long as you had a snapped sensor you may escape without tester just disconnect the battery before you work on it

Thanks guys. I have tried washing up liquid on the bags but no sign of a leak, admittedly the suspension didn't drop whilst I was testing it. Next thing must be to change the bag. What do people think about changing singley or is changing as a pair a must?

Thanks , the rubber gromet had snapped allowing arm to come away from the pivot bolt on main chasis, so lets hope all ok .

Well just fitted new air bag , and ride height sensor , still wont go up !! have taken cover off compressor, and is running when engine turned on , then cuts off after 30 seconds or so , cant get compressor to run when ride height switch pressed in cab , any ideas please , or are we looking at new compressor ?

jack up the rear of the car to half of the height and try then, maybe you can trick the sensors... if you didnt disconnect the battery before you unplugged the sensor it might have lost the calibration and you need somebody with tester to recalibrate.

ok will try that , i did disconect battery , and had car chasis jacked up , but will try again thanks .

you could try jacking the back up till you think it is about the correct ride height then start engine up make sure all doors and bonnet are closed and see if it works then
