Was about to install some wing chequer plating but the air intake on top of the wing got me thinking: where does all that water go?

The catchment tube below the vent on the wing seemed to be holding water, so I poked around and found what seemed to be a blocked hole. Prodded the hole with a screwdriver and all the rusty water drained out and past the wheel arch onto the floor.

Now I also have a snorkel fitted, so I'm not sure if that vent is doping anything at all.

Question is: have I just screwed something up? Was I supposed to clear that hole to allow water to freely drip in through the wing vent and out through the drain?
 
The vent on the top of the wing is your heater nothing to do with the snorkel.

There is a one way valve in the bottom of the heater intake that looks just like the little donkey dick on the bottom of the air filter housing. It is meant to let the water out and none back up. However the seem to jam up with crap and then the heater inlet acts like a bucket. I have filled mine with water and had it come through the heater ducting and pour out over my legs!!

I just removed the donkey dick in the end and the water just runs out the bottom.

Right, well I just cleared mine using a small screwdriver and a finger. The hole seems to be clear now (just hoping it's supposed to be.)

I'm just a little worried because the chequer plating is riveted on and covers the vent screws, and I don't want to have to drill out the plating rivets just to clear that hole every few months.

But perhaps it can be cleared from underneath?
 
You should be fitting chequer plate that has a hole in it for the vent!!! If you cover the vent where do you expect to get the air flow for your heater from?

Sorry, I didn't explain that one properly. There is a cutout for the vent but the screws holding the vent will be covered by the plating, unless I drill some holes through the plating so that the vent can be secured from above the plating.

I would imagine thats the correct way to do it!
 
Sounds like poor design of the plating or it has been fitted incorrectly.

There are a couple of different designs.
The best one has the vent cutout made larger than the vent so it can be removed at will and the plastic vent is flush with the top of the plating. The type I really dislike is where the vent is fitted on top of the plating as that way is it prone to damage if it is stood or kneeled on.
Never come across your one unless it is the second one I described and you didn't remove the vent before fitting the plating?
 
I've got some wing top plates to go on to. I wasn't planning to rivet them though, I was planning some small counter sunk socket head cap type bolts. Also, as others have said, im pretty sure you should be able to take that vent off with the plate fitted
 
If its a 200 dont forget there is also a rubber dump valve just inside the wing where the snorkel bolts to, not sure on the 300 model.
Po fitted my plating and its as the op said it covers the screws totally clever not!

Hmmm - visions of peeps using their fingers and srewdrivers to clean out the inside of a donkey's dick.......and no one made a joke about it???
