While I had the viscous off I noticed the belts were looking a little tired so nipped up the local factors and bought a few belts. Unfortunately the air conditioning compressor one is a little too long and it won't tighten up enough. It is a Gates 4PK855. Anyone know what the code for the Gates belt I actually need is? That way I hopefully won't be boomeranging back and forth all week. Put the old one back on for now.

It is a 1995 2.5 DT.

Have a look on Island 4x4 site for the part number, your local factor should be able to cross reference it:)
 
Micorcat says 4PK853. The photo on Rimmers list is a 4PK830 but that could just be representative and not the actual belt. Measure the length of the old one.

The bit after the 4PK is the length in mm? Well, the 855 wasn't far off. I had to sit them on top of each other to spot it was too long. 853 doesn't sound much different so I'm guessing it must be the 830 one.

Cool. Of course, for the sake of 5 minutes work I could whip the old one off and take it with me!

The old one was 830mm.

Gates only do an stretch to fit one in 830mm (I'm told) so ordered one. Hope it works. Actually need air-conditioning at the moment!
 
Bosch do a non-stretch one for the record. However, it only has 10Nm of tension on it so wouldn't think it would matter that much?
 
Aircon compressor takes a lot of turning how a stretch belt would work i don't know never heard of one.
 
There seem to be two different sizes quoted for the diesel a/c belt 4PK855 and 4PK836, the number does relate to the circumfrential length. There are two tapped holes for the tensioner to fit to; I don't know if the two belts suit the different positions or why that would be necessary, one of life's mysteries. Mine takes the shorter one as standard.

The stretch belt is a demon mod if you're having slipping problems. While it's described as a stretch, it's no elastic band and I didn't feel I was stretching it by hand, I think it fits the later BMW 525D. Oddly enough I thought I could just make out the numbers 837 on the old belt. However, when measured (3rd bl**dy time taking it back before they got out the proper measuring tool) the old belt was definitely 830mm. However, tried to fit it this evening and although the packaging clearly said 4PK830SF on the outside (= 4 ribs, 830mm, stretch fit) the effing belt inside was a 5PK820. So, going to have to go back AGAIN tomorrow. The amount orf fuel I've burnt going back and forth to AllParts I could have bought a gold-plated belt from the Stealers.

Apparently they have a special tool to fit stretch belts. As you say you have to really pull on it to get any kind of stretch and it is only supposed to have 10 Nm tension. What I am unclear on is whether it is 830mm stretched or unstretched?!

Either way I'll give AllParts one last go to get it right. Literally. Never going back again.
 
4PK830FS went on fine with a little help from a screwdriver to get it over the lip of the pulley.

May have overtightened it a tad though as it squeals a little when the compressor clutch kicks in.

Squeal usually means slip. :);)
 
More rubbery squeal than metal to metal I'd say. Only does it when the compressor clutch kicks in. Cannot hear it in the car, only when standing outside or head under the bonnet. Wouldn't say it was a slipping type squeal. Certainly no sign of slipping when I was watching it.

Just been trying to work out if I can get to the tensioner without removing the viscous again. Short answer: no, not with my tools! Undecided. Maybe it'll just run itself in? Or if it is too tight, is it pulling the compressor bearings and will knacker it?
 
Took it all apart and redid it. Tightened it up as far as I dare. No squeal. I think the belt is looser than the old one so I don't think the stretch belt is such a good idea. It is working OK but as it ages it is bound to stretch a little and I just wonder if it will start squealing. Time will tell, I guess.

Of course, I was nursing a hang-over so I steamed in and whipped the radiator hoses and viscous off. A load of my brand new extortionately expensive anti-freeze / coolant poured out. Muppet! Should have drained a pint from the rad before I started. Rushing! Lesson learnt for next time though. Viscous came straight off with no issues whatsoever. Thanks to Wammers for the tip on just doing it up until the nut stops moving and Nik the Geek for the copper-slip tip.

Time to take her for a drive!
