I am going to buy a diy air con top up kit.

Where is the low pressure air con valve located on a 06 TD4?

Is it, (as looking from front of enginge) top right, and the low pressure valve would be the smaller one?

I am just trying to work out if I need to also buy an adaptor.

I had to when I had a megane.

The image shows the arrow pointing to the smaller one, which the standard Halfords connector fits.
The larger one (if correct) would need an adaptor.

yeah sorry ..
assumed you meant pipe diameter

the larger pipe be the low pressure one

anyhow the fitting on that kit will only fit to one of the valves .. 'n that be the right one ..

Int it betterer to have an air con machine clean out the system and refill with correct amount of oil and pressure?

The Halfords stuff includes a cleaner.

It might have a cleaner but how can it clean? It doesn't take anything out the system so any dirt would remain.
Those DIY kits also contain oil. This oil over fills the oil in the system so reducing AC efficiency.
I'd use Quick Fit. For £50 they evacuate the system, clean the system and refill with fresh gas. I'd not use them for anything else but there AC service is top notch.

I used kwikfit when I had a megane.
I took it back to them 3 times because the air was not cold.
They could find no leak, which was not surprising because all they did was fill the system each time. there were no checks at all.

I won't use them again, hence me wanting to buy a diy kit for my freelander.

You can't be blamed for not wanting to use them again if you have had bad service.
I've used them in preference to my own garages equipment as there system is newer. Not had a problem so far.

The machine should find the leaks as it pressurises the system and realises it can't. They won't continue with re-gassing. They should put a die in to see where it's leaking from.

Someone posted on an air con fred about the technicalities of re-gassing the air conditioning. The result being only to use the proper machine and not the re-gas can. Essentially a more in-depth reasoning for the topics nodge mentioned above. I remember it as it's why I asked the question earlier but can't find the fred.

I always use Kwik Fit for air-con as they charge a fixed £50 fee for re-gassing and there is a no-fix no-fee charge. I think their definition of fix is a minimum 10 degrees of cooling. What the machines do which you cannot do with a top up can is create a vacuum in the system and check that it holds for 20 minutes (this is the leak test) - this removes all old oil, moisture and gas. They then fill it with the correct refrigerant and lubricant. With their kit they can check the operation of the system (i.e. pressure differential high/low side when the compressor is operating). Moisture can be the real issue here as some refrigerants react with water and become corrosive to the a/c system.

Now I know that some KF branches are staffed with the wrong type of person but when the above is done properly I think it is very much worth the extra £10 over a tin of gas from Halfords. If you fill it with a tin from Halfords and find a leak, you fix it and fill it again it's cost you £80. With KF it will only be £50.

It was probably down to the staff at my local kwik fit.
They didn't seem to know what to do and couldn't understand why after 3 top ups, I still had no cold air.

The past two cars I have had the aircon serviced at my local KF (Beverley) they have a temperature probe and they stick it in the vent and they have demonstrated the difference between no a/c and full a/c.
