Before you go spending out on a new air con compressor. Set all the controls to low, and with the engine running give the pulley of the compressor a tap with something metalic - if it kicks in all that is required is a quick tweak that invloves removing a washer. Also do a search on compressor loom, there is a known issue that causes a low voltage at the compressor preventing it kicking in. There is a replacement loom available.
Keep us posted on what you find.

Also I am sure there is an issue with a low supply voltage to the compressor clutch on vehicles of your age - I also believe there is a replacement loom available to fix. If you get a "pssst" you have gas, but this method will only tell you you have some and not how much. Moving onto the air con now, i think I have found the air con low pressure cap and opened it up but the inside of the cap seems sealed shut with a ball bearing type thing. Cannot get a screwdriver in there and it is only a couple of millimetres deep. Secondly, where is the compressor pulley I have not found it as yet.

One other thing, left standing for a week and came back to a flat battery. On new battery now. Is it likely to be the RF receiver that caused this?

cant really help with the air con, but the jam on your window is probably a loose window rubber. My 1995 dtse had the same problem last week. Inside the door panel at the front is a support rubber which holds the glass firmly in place within the door skin when the window is down. Basically this stops the glass rattling about when you close the door. Its possible this has become weak with age and has come loose, moving up inside the door. Look at the door window trim in beside your wing mirror, the top may be visible at this point, and this is the probable cause of the window jam. I simply got hold of it and pulled it up and out, just have to remember not to slam the door with the window down. Problem solved. Hope this is of some help:D

also take the door skin off and check the rivets that hold the mech. to the door, one of mine popped and i had to replace with a nut and bolt!!!

Hi

Okay, more info on the heating/cooling situation, and still have the dreaded book symbol :). In these cooler times I am getting both cold and warm air once the car warms up. I still cannot move it from the vents/windscreen position and still have no air con.

Cold air only occurs on LO otherwise it is as warm on 24 as it is on 16.

Does this mean the heater matrix is knackered? Or is it, as suggested above, the compressor clutch?

My lack of knowledge on this subject is fairly big so any help would be much appreciated.

Re-read that and realise that that is the point. I read "hot or cold" as only hot or only cold and as had both thought it did not apply to me.

On to that, some garages reckon that the heater matrix will be knackered as well, how can I check it isn't?

No leaking into the footwells at all, when I last checked, by the way.

Also, how to tell if the compressor clutch is failing me....where is it?

If your not losing coolant and you at least are getting some warm air then I would say your matrix is ok

Stupid me looking at teh wrong diagram on the workshop manual, go to the right one and there it is.

It's an electrically operated/activated clutch and forms part of the a/c compressor which is belt driven by the engine. I would guess the clutch mechanism is some where behind and very close to the pully end.
 
And if it dont kick in,give it a tap with the blunt end of a screwdriver)watch out for the belt) and see what happens.
