Any one advise on this one, I'm currently looking at a 1996 2.5dse, according to the service schedule it's due new air bags as it's 10 years old.

Any conciquences if it's not done, how would it affect the value.

Otherwise it's a good car, 2 owners from new, full Landrover History, 107k miles, I believe that the air bags should have been replaced at 100k ?.

I imagine the conciquences would be a 'low' corner one day!
No big deal, one of mine failed a few weeks after I bought it (95DSE) I bought 4 genuine Dunlops (new)on e-bay for £68.00 each,replaced all 4 in 2 hours. Probably the easiest job on a P38.

Thanks Modelman, One thing I did not make clear, I actually mean the airbags inside the car.

how can airbags inside the car need replacing after a certain no of miles. you could have a 10 year old car with 45,000 miles or a 2 year old car with 150,000 miles on the clock.the arbags do not wear out through mileage and you have to replace them once they have gone off anyway. i have never heard of inner airbags needing replacing due to mileage or age. i think someone may be pulling your ****er mate

Thanks, Honest, I read it from the original service docs supplied with the vehicle from new.
I'm buying the car, so when it's in front of me I will quote what it says in Black and White, its a Land Rover Document. Also Land Rover recommend that air bags are replaced at the age between 10 and 12 years.quote Guy Salmon today.

Sorry YD, but it is true. On every car you should change the air bag every ten years. Some cars have a really annoying timer in them that lights up the air bag lamp on the dash until the components are replaced and lamp reset by dealer. I think it is something to do with the explosive part of it "going off".

Mine is just over 10 years old now, to be honest I have absolutely no intention of doing it! I suspect it is cautionary - to protect the manufacturer from liability should the air bag fail due to possible degredation of specific components.

POssibly slightly off topic here but is there a way to disarm or turn off the front passenger airbag. I ask because I have to fit a rear facing child seat in my 2000 Vogue but can't with front airbag.

Any help appreciated.

Fit the seat in the back, its far more dangerous to have it in the front even if the airbag is turned off.

Hi,

The air bags in my P38 are now nearly 12 years old and I do not intend to replace them. I did look into this but to buy new ones is prohibitively expensive LR quoted over £1000 each just for the parts which is just ridiculous. If you're really concerned you could try and get some out of a newer vehicle that's been scrapped - assuming it has been in a crash!
