Looks like this week I will be FINALLY getting a 110 that fits my requirements! :D

It's a completely bog standard 110 TD5 van for a very good price considering the market at the moment, which means that there's a good chunk of money left over for upgrades, first of which will be tyres and modular wheels.

I notice John Craddock, which isn't too far up the road, is doing a decent deal on Insa Turbo wheels & tyres. I'm wondering whether to go for a modest pattern Sahara or Traction pattern, or a more aggressive Special Track Pattern.

The vehicle is purely a toy for greenlaning and pay and play, and occasional use as a recreational van to cart stuff around for the cadets, so I'm not fussed atall about road noise and harshness, so long as the tyres are capable if driven correctly on road, and don't wear out astonishingly quick.

I'm just wondering if the standard drivetrain is up to such an aggressive pattern, or whether I'm better off with the more modest but hopefully quite adequate Dakar/Traction package?

Thoughts?

Why not the mechanical stuff first. Like service the fuel system first, you know fuel filter,leaks ,fuel pick screen's. then maybe the brake system, bigger tires need better brakes. change all the oil's in the drive system. Check and change u-joints ,axel bearings . Check the suspension system and make needed repairs.
Why is it BIG TIRES are the first thing you newbies do? Cosmetic stuff dosen't mean **** if the rest isn't in tip top shape.

I like this forum, there's a wealth of information here, and it's a decent active forum. But the elitism on show sometimes often makes you wonder why.

You're jumping to conclusions assuming that I wouldn't do a full service myself ANYWAY, if one was due or required.

As for bigger means you need better brakes, well I disagree with that entirely. LR disc brakes are more than adequate for the sort of size upgrades that most people go for providing they are properly serviced and in good working order.

And what's this about cosmetic stuff? Some people may see bigger wheels and tires as a cosmetic improvement, personally speaking I think they look better too, but that's not the reason that I or many others buy them, so don't go about jumping to conclusions trying to look all big and clever tarring all and sundry with that brush of yours.

I'm going to assume the comment of 'newbie' is pointed in my direction since it's the first reply in a thread of mine, and again I'll ask if you know me, because I suspect you don't. You don't know **** about me, so stick your newbie comment square up your arse sunshine.

I've been playing and off roading with Land Rovers for quite a few years myself, and just because there's no big impact threads under my name bragging about what I've done and how I've done it, doesn't mean I'm new to the game.

Better brakes means good pads and rotors, not worn and thin.

And sunshine i"ve got under pants older than you. You may not be new to the game , but i have forgotten more by accident than you will learn on purpose :D:D:D

Google and the computer are wonderful tools for finding out all kinds of stuff about people. :eek::eek: see ya later:D:D:D

Na just seems a silly question for someone who, has spent so long around Landrovers and the off roading world, and would of got loads of information over the years of playing around with them, and reading threads and being part of an active community as yourve been on here so long and made so much of a contribution to it.

And a hell of a way to answer someone who has given his advice, ok John may have mistaken you for a numty and a newbie.

And to just notice that one of the larger suppliers of landrover parts is just down the road, well I am sure that most people on here will know of where most of the suppleirs are in the nearest 50 miles, if not where the larger ones are in the country.

And to ask if he knows you i doubt it..... his from the states

I honestly didn't know that you ever got to a point where you stopped needing, or even wanting out of interest the views of others.

I've spent enough time with landrovers to know alot of things, but I've never had aggressive pattern tyres, which was the point of asking.

I actually thought they'd be okay if they weren't thrown into the deep end in anger to be honest, but wanted opinions of those who have had them.

And a hell of a way to answer someone who has given his advice, ok John may have mistaken you for a numty and a newbie.

Matt; You started it with FINALLY got a 110 that meets my needs. first thing BIG TIRES, thats a scary thought. When I buy used and get it home I go over it with a fine tooth comb. To make it road worthy and safe for you and others around. Safety first. 45 years ago when i got my first car.put the shiny stuff on first and then the repairs came later with little money for repairs. Its bite me in the ass.

Was just tryin to give some advice from experience of a old dog thats been there , so you wouldn't make the same mistakes OK

John, your advice is sound and absolutely right, but the delivery of it was unnecessarily brash.

My post did say that there's money left over for upgrades, first of which will be bigger tires. I'm no mug with mechanics, I've worked at dealerships and specialist garages for 8 years myself. The first thing I do with any vehicle is make sure it's upto scratch in it's standard form first.

Your initial response assumed something beyond what I posted, which is not fair on anyone, like I said, you don't know me. And to comment "You newbies" is just disrespect in light of that.

My response to you then may well have been very retaliatory, but anyone who DOES know me, knows that I'm NOT that type to accept being spoken to that way, and respond in like. I'm a pleasant, and I'd like to think helpful chap, but I don't roll over if I feel I've been short changed.

I've seen alot of cyber bullying esque behaviour on this site on a couple of occasions, and general anti-newguy attitude, and there's absolutely no need for it. Sound advice can be delivered without the bitter 'I'm better than you' attitude which some people on here possess, and you came across that way.

I may claim to have experience in both driving off road and mechanics, but I also believe that nobody stops learning at any stage and any point of experience. It's always nice to know and take on board what other people think. And when situations like this come up where you do so, and are instantly taken for a 'newbie' who jumps straight into things it makes you wonder why you bother.

Like I said, don't tar everyone with that brush, there's no need.

He didn't ask us about basic maintenance, he asked us about tyres. :rolleyes:

A tyre upgrade should be the FIRST, repeat, the FIRST upgrade you consider when kitting out your Landy for off road use. Without decent rubber, all other upgrading efforts are a waste of time, effort and money.

Seeing as the OP is considering upgrades, we therefore assume he is confident about the mechanical condition of the vehicle, so why not just answer his question?

Regarding tyres - I had Insa Saharas on my previous 110, and found them to be excellent in the sticky stuff. Never found to be wanting in any of the terrain I encountered.

The Special Track pattern is about as extreme as it gets in terms of legal mud terrains, and these would definitely be overkill for green laning, but you would find them useful on pay and play days.

Needless to say they are damned noisy things, and their performance on tarmac (particularly in the wet) leaves quite a lot to be desired.

Drivetrain will be fine so long as you're not going mad with it. Things like halfshafts and diffs only break when you're gunning it and spinning wheels, aggressive tyres make this worse as they can suddenly find traction and do a lot of damage. But again that's only if you're going mad with it.

Brake upgrades etc are not needed as you say - so long as they're in reasonable shape, all the standard LR systems (braking, steering, suspension) will be more than adequate.

Go back and read the thread again, jw gave good advice in his first reply- you took it the wrong way and got defensive, I'd have just said 'yep, doin all that inorl:D' Perhaps you want the aggressive tyres (note proper spelling, jw;):D) to match your aggressive manner?:mooning:
