Hi. I'm new to the forum and would be grateful for some advice.

I'm a newish LR fan an am keen to purchase a discovery very soon for family, weekend, roof tent camping adventures etc but don't have a huge budget. I'm looking at about £3000 but with so many out there for sale it's hard to make a good choice being a novice.

I don't mind spending a bit if money on upkeep and improvements but I don't want to end up with a financial nightmare.

Could anyone help with some basic tips of what too look for I.e
tdi or td5,
What things should I be cautious of when looking at a potential purchase
Any models / years to avoid
Etc etc

Also could anyone advise on some useful aftermarket improvements that would be recommended to do to a discovery that would help keep it on the road and out of the workshop. I've seen many examples and threads on engine remapping, waxoyling and various component upgrades but wondered what the most important priorities would be.

Sorry for so many questions but gotta start somewhere and a forum full of experts seem like the best place !!!!

Thanks.

Discovery 1's are knocking on a bit now, 1998/99 was the last of them, and D2's were available from Late 1998 onwards.

D2 (TD5) is a better buy now than the D1 (300Tdi) but the 300Tdi is a simpler vehicle, shorted than the D2 and cheaper to buy.

D1's suffer from body rust, D2's are starting to see chassis rust at the back end.

Both have a huge range of bits and pieces available, spares are good and inexpensive.

Hi.
Thanks for the guidance. I probably will go for a D2 to be honest. Would be great to hear from anyone who has a reliable one in good condition for sale.

Some additional advice on what aftermarket upgrades and changes one should make to a D2 to maximise its potential and in what order.

Thanks.
