Hi all,
looking to purchase first ever Landy....looking at the freelancer 2. I have read mixed reports/reviews on previous models of Freelander (mostly petrol vehicles) and wondered if there had been any improvements on the Freelander 2 model.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I don't really want to shell out the best part of £10,000 only to have to keep taking it to the local garage to get the head skimmed and clutch replaced..etc..etc

Cheers

the freelander 1 (pre and post facelift) is a totally different vehicle to the freelander 2.

even the Td4 engine in the freelander 1 is not the same TD4 as in the freelander 2.
(Td4 is 2.0 litre, TD4 is 2.2 litre, totally different engine)

There is very little (if anything) common between the vehicles except the name.

good luck.

Cheers for the response, if you were a green Land Rover bod what would you look out for? the freelancer 2 i'm looking at is an ex fleet vehicle, full service history 2007 plate with 126miles on the clock?

cheers

sorry to say, have no experience of these at all. was lining one up a potential future replacement for my freelander 1 commercial, but then land rover in their wisdom stopped making the freelander 2 commercial.

From what I've heard the FL2 is very reliable. Probably because it is made at a different factory, which is the same one that made the Jag X Type, which coincidentally was Jag's most reliable car too..

The FL2 is extremely reliable to be honest.

Unlike most the models JLR produce, the FL2 keeps pretty much the same every year except for cosmetic differences. It means they keep getting more reliable.

Common problems on the earlier FL2's are ; PAS whine and Rear diff whine.

As above, PAS and Diff Whine are areas to watch out for on pre-2008 models. The diff whine was caused by poor quality pinion bearings in the rear diff, and should have been sorted under warranty.

The PAS whine was caused by contamination of the power steering fluid, which blocked up the filter in the power steering reservoir, starving the pump of oil and creating the whine. If left unchecked this can lead to failure of the power steering rack - but replacement of the reservoir will usually remedy the issue.

Other than that they are generally very reliable! There are niggles as with any car, but a lot of this is due to lack of maintenance. When looked after, it is an excellent vehicle! There's plenty more info online, check out the freel2 forum.

HTH,
Lew

Another good thing is that unlike the FL1 the FL2 has a Halex unit instead of a viscous coupling unit - this means that you won't get IRD/Diff failure due to transmission wind-up caused by a failed vcu. So you've got a bit more peace of mind there that FL1 owners have to keep an eye on!

This may sound odd, but the very fact that we hardly ever have people coming on here asking about problems with their FL2 would suggest to me that they aren't as unpredictable as their older brothers!

I say go for it, just follow sevice intervals to the letter and make sure you do all your scheduled checks - which you should do with any car.

Give it time and they will come
